Finally I upgraded iMac 2010 from High Sierra to latest Ubuntu 26.04. It was long overdue as modern browsers abandoned High Sierra years ago. Nail to the coffin was Minecraft, which refuses to run anymore. Yes, it's my daughter's machine.
Ubuntu works fine: Wi-Fi, fans, temp sensors. The only issue was disappearing mouse cursor. Fix is MUTTER_DEBUG_DISABLE_HW_CURSORS="1" in /etc/environment (or KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR="1", if you run KDE). I leave it for posterity, it took me a good while to figure out. #YearOfLinuxDesktop #wayland

DoubleCMD ist eine echt gute Alternative zum Total Commander. #YearOfLinuxDesktop

Okay, first finding which really pisses me off. KeePass2 is acting weird on Wayland. (Yea I know that this is Mono+wine). Context Menu is for example always showing on primary screen. Also clipboard does not work properly.

KeePass2 + KeePassXC are not supporting autotype, as Wayland does not have a Protocol for autotyping.

I now used a Raspberry Pico and HID device to write big passphrases into KVM sessions. Annoying. But luckily I don't need that often.

Sure #flatpak has issues (missing neighbouring files portal f.e.). But people still spread misconceptions around it. I should gather them for a talk.

People still repeat the duplicated libraries per app argument not acknowledging the existence of shared runtimes ... :)

#flatpak is the future and thanks everyone for putting the effort to make it possible.

I updated to #kde #plasma6 this morning. I started the plasma session with #wayland - and guess what?

Everything JUST WORKS.

Multi-Display, Screen sharing, Camera, etc etc... everything works out of the box just like you'd expected.

My laptop gets a lot less use than my desktop PC, but I usually import photos from my camera onto my laptop, since that's what I have with me while traveling.

Since I took the plunge and switched my laptop from Windows 10 to Debian, this is my first try importing photos. Was relatively painless except for weird behavior where attaching the camera mounts it as a folder which prevents Shotwell the photo manager from accessing the camera, so I had to unmount the camera as a drive before I could import in Shotwell.

Aside from that, actual import and a few tweaks to try things out went well enough. Momiji to celebrate :momiji:

Installed Debian on my laptop since I'm most familiar with the Ubuntu/Debian ecosystem, but would rather avoid further investments in Canonical and snap.

Went with Cinnamon desktop since out of the different live disk desktops I tried (gnome, kde, mate, xfce), the default look and behaviour annoyed me the least.

Touchpad does what I want, menus and title bars do what I want, "taskbar" is fine, settings and "start menu" are fine, WiFi connected with no issues.

KDE was runner up, but wtf is going on with that keyring setup required to connect to WiFi, no thanks.

I'm pretty lazy as a user, yeah I do want to be able to customize how things work, but I don't want to HAVE to customize how things work. If software ships with defaults that annoy me, I'm probably not going to invest the time in tweaking it to make it palatable, which is a major source of friction for me using Linux as a real user (instead of a server admin, or for testing game builds).
