Terwijl de Arabische legers oprukten naar Marokko, overleed kalief Yazid I, en gedurende anderhalf jaar was onduidelijk wie de macht zou overnemen. In 685 trad Abd al-Malik aan, die u kunt kennen als de bouwer van de Rotskoepel in Jeruzalem. Pas in 688 kon een nieuw Arabisch leger naar Ifriqiya komen, gecommandeerd door de stokoude Zuhayr ibn Qays, een van de metgezellen van de profeet Mohammed. Kusayla realiseerde zich dat het nog niet ommuurde Kairouan niet te verdedigen was en trok zich terug naar de westelijke bergen, maar werd verslagen en gedood.
Zuhayr kreeg de kans niet om zijn gezag in Ifriqiya afdoende te consolideren, want kort na de overwinning kreeg hij het bericht dat de Byzantijnen in de tegenaanval waren gegaan en de Cyrenaica hadden aangevallen. Zijn aanvoerlijnen waren afgesneden. Hij haastte zich terug en kwam om het leven in een gevecht met de Byzantijnse soldaten.
De vijfde Arabische aanval
Pas in 695 had Abd al-Malik zijn macht voldoende gevestigd om de situatie in het westen definitief te regelen. De generaal die hij aanwees, was Hassan ibn al-Nu‘man. Ik heb tot nu toe zelden de familierelaties van de diverse legeraanvoerders vermeld, omdat de stammen en clans de Nederlandstalige lezer weinig zeggen, maar in dit geval is misschien interessant dat hij behoorde tot de Ghassaniden, de groep die ooit de oostgrens van het Romeinse Rijk had bewaakt. Dit was oude Arabische adel.
Hassans eerste doelwit was Karthago. De stad was geen schim meer van wat ze geweest: de bevolking was door allerlei oorzaken sterk afgenomen, de handel was ingestort, de exarch regeerde over nauwelijks meer dan een paar dorpen in de omgeving, en de Byzantijnse vloten opereerden liever vanaf Sicilië. Daar waren ook de meeste Karthagers al heen gevlucht. Hassan kon de stad zonder problemen overmeesteren. Het even verderop gelegen Bizerte volgde. De Berbers die met de Byzantijnen verbonden waren, trokken zich terug naar de havenstad Annaba.
Maalga, de cisternen van KarthagoDe Byzantijnen waren echter nog niet voorgoed uit Ifriqiya verdreven. Een vloot heroverde Karthago, waarop Hassan de stad voor de tweede keer innam. Ditmaal maakte hij de stad voorgoed onbewoonbaar: hij sloopte de muren, hij vernietigde de Maalga-cisterne en hij blokkeerde de twee havenbekkens. Deze tweede, grondige verovering van Karthago betekende dat de stad nog eeuwenlang militair geen betekenis meer zou hebben. De Byzantijnen keerden nooit meer terug.

#Iraq 's PM has ordered the reconstruction of a village where #daesh carried out one of its worst atrocities against the #Yazidi community nine years ago. On 15th August 2014, #ISIS fighters separated the men in the village from their families, killing hundreds of them. In a stmt issued on the 9th anniv of the #Sinjar massacre, Mr al-Sudani said the reconstruction was intended to honour the people of the village and underscore the right of Iraqis to live safely and in dignity.

Ganz böse Schatten, die da gerade wieder im #Irak erwachen:
In #Sindschar - einer multiethnischen & multireligiösen Stadt - sollen #Jesiden eine Moschee angezündet haben. Das behaupten Menschen in den sozialen Medien und posten Fotos der angeblich zerstörten Moschee.
Die sunnitische Gemeinde widerspricht rasch, dass die Rahman-Moschee nicht beschädigt wurde und die jesidische Demonstration friedlich verlief.
Trotzdem hetzen hunderte Irakis auf Social Media gegen Jesiden, nennen sie "Ungläubige" und "Teufelsanbeter".
Es sind genau diese Worte, mit denen #Daesch (#ISIS) ab 2014 den Völkermord an den Jesiden betrieb und rechtfertigte.
