how is it the end of #yarnuary already? idk. time is weird.
I am planning a new linen sweater and I am arranging my color palette so I can make some plans. Rosie is here to help, because of course she is.
this yarn is from colourmart, I love their wind-it-yerself bargain bin. I think it's a fun challenge to start with a limited set of colors. left to my own devices I only buy jewel tones, but my clothes are mostly neutrals so buying a mix of both is perfect for me (and cheaper too!)

#Yarnuary goals... try to get my yarn stash down! When the red/grey freeform crochet jacket is done, I was bought lots of sea-themed yarn. I'm thinking of an overskirt with a stormy sea theme or a dress.

longer term goals for this year are shadow weave (y'all are going to love that) and plaited twill.
I bought some new books and they are so full of interesting ideas! the double two-tie book is especially exciting, because it has some very cool things you can do with twill. I have always been fascinated by plaited twill and now I'm finally going to buckle down and figure out how it works.

#yarnuary goals? well, right now I'm continuing my color-and-lace explorations. I'm catching up on homework for the JST online classes by doing two projects at once. the rainbow curtains were also homework. homework can be fun when there's no grades and no pressure!
this project has a Fibonacci stripe sequence with Atwater-Bronson lace blocks. it's probably going to be towels unless it washes up too drapey. then ... idk. maybe I will wear it! I love wearing orange and pink.

#yarnuary What do you want to learn/ do this year?
Last year I said I wanted to try brioche and double knitting, then did absolutely nothing about it! So this year I will learn brioche and double knitting (and possibly entrelac, inspired by the recent posts about this)
I have just ordered the wool for my mum’s birthday cardigan (luckily her birthday is in November so I have plenty of time) and I need to re knit my nephew’s Xmas jumper, as age 13 was still too small for his 11 year old self!

#yarnuary Favorite tools? I'm a Bates crochet hook person - the two styles are Bates and Boye, and they differ in tapering point of the hook, shape of the throat, and placement of the thumb. Judging by what's in my big can o' hooks, my favorites are plastic L (8mm) hooks and metal H (5mm) hooks. It has been my unscientific observation that in general, knife hold/overhand crocheters tend to prefer Bates, and pen hold/underhand crocheters tend to prefer Boye.

I once knit 2-in-1 socks - that's knitting them in a sort of double knitting, one inside of the other. It went well for quite some time, but at one point I got too confident and didn't check as much, as I should have - and connected the two tubes.
What to do?
Dropping the stitch and knitting it back up of course.

I really like my louet Jane. I have had it almost as long as my big loom, maybe a year less, and we get along so well.
my favorite trick is to sley the reed from the middle out while it's flat in the beater. it is so much easier than working vertically and so much easier than counting/measuring dents. I like that my elbows stay down and my light is right where I need it to be.

#yarnuary My best fix was removing the sleeves when reknitting a jumper to incorporate bust adjustment... and grafting them back on *grins*
I mainly work with non-superwash wool and I really enjoy spit-splicing. I halve the plies where they'll overlap, give them real saliva, and rub briskly between my palms to felt the join. No sewing of ends for the win :)

I have so many favorite tools. Collecting tools is its own hobby.
I love interchangeable needles. I have so many sets. There are so many good ones now. My latest set is the knit pro/ lantern moon collaboration.
I love my swift. I love my $2 flea market ball winder that I scored 20 years ago. I love my wood folding rulers that I find second hand.
I especially love my sterling silver darning needles. They live permanently around my neck so I am never without one.

What's your favourite fiber?
Wool and wool blend.
Pure wool for sweaters and assorted accessories. Wool blend for socks. I'm a sucker for just about every varigated and self-patterning sockyarn going.My favourite colourway is probably blue and green together, followed by anything rainbow patterned.
Here's a couple of largeish scarves I worked up from knitty.com sources. L is a 19th c lace pattern. R is a skinny scarf pattern I widened bc I don't like skinny scarves. -
the other tiny tool I couldn't live without is my stash of choke ties. I make them from the loom waste on my big loom.
they are good for tying anything to anything because they're very strong and easy on the fingers. and it's a nice reminder of projects that have gone out into the world - there are three or four warps represented just by the choke ties in this picture.

#yarnuary - what was your greatest improvisation?
I've documented my knitting and crochet projects for over 15 years, that's a lot of things to choose from.
But if I really think improvising - that's probably my contribution to the great coral reef project, the exhibition in Baden-Baden to be precise. I went there and found a few of my contributions. And it was really cool to see my name on the large wall among the thousands of others.

My favourite cable book is the Knitted Cable Sourcebook by Norah Gaughan, which led to me making this jumper (nice front but very boring to make otherwise) and this baby blanket (basically me trying lots of different stitches). Apologies to anyone who I’ve spammed with these before! #yarnuary

I don't have much to add to the #Yarnuary prompt for where have I travelled for yarn ... as I simply don't travel (dodgy immune system).
So.... I bought the first ball of cotton yarn while I was working in Fukushima, Japan in 2011, but never had time to craft. It eventually turned into dishcloths when I started crocheting in 2015.
My next many in-person wool purchases were from the main sewing shop in the center of Leipzig, Germany (until 2017). Mostly blankets, cowls, and a shawl.
All since then, all have been online, around the world, most recently, Mongolia (Herders to Home Kickstarter).
I think though, my first gifted wool has travelled the farthest - a bunch of gorgeous jewel tones from Australia, and it's still too precious that I haven't dared assign it a pattern!

First sleeve completed apart from a bit of surface work. A lot of Georgia O'Keeffe-type spirals. Big shout out to all the independent dyers and spinners this yarn came from. When it's finished, I'll post links to them.

Not really that crazy distances so far. The most probably was a fiber festival in #Blaufelden which is about 160 km / 100 miles from where I live.
It was my partners idea to go there, but his motives had not that much do with yarn and fiber. We're members of our local #carsharing Coop #stadtmobil and he got a chance to borrow a Tesla, his first chance to test an electric car for a longer trip.

One yarn I can't get away with is cotton. I had to really force myself to finish this evil eye granny square blanket. It was from Hobbii and 70% off! Was making 2 freeform cushions with leftovers but have hidden them under the bed. I like a bit of give in yarns. Also a super chunky premium acrylic which crocheted up like a board. Never again.
