How did the #intensity of #wildfires change throughout the past in one of the coldest regions in the world? 🔥❄️📉
To answer this question, we used #BPCAs from sediment samples from #Yakutia, #Siberia. Find our results, now published open access, here:

New preprint out! 🔥 Using combined paleo-ecological and modeling methods, we uncover regional Holocene #wildfire dynamics in eastern #Siberia. Notably, our findings suggest potential human impacts as early as 5000 years ago - contrasting a common view of historically unmanaged forests 🌲
So far, any historical human impacts on fire regimes or traditional land use practices with relevance for wildfire were poorly acknowledged in international literature for eastern Siberia - despite clear indications from Indigenous communities, and former visitors leaving us with clear hints: For example, Georg W. Steller describes in the early 1700s his observation of common burning in forests near the Lena River. And in 1913, Fridtjof Nansen writes in his expedition notes about a long-standing habit of the Natives to burn old grasses near the Amur River. There is more to this 🔍
According to our study, fuel availability seems to be a key factor here. We discuss by example of the #Sakha how people may have reduced wildfire severity around their settlements since c. 800 years ago.

How was past #wildfire activity in eastern #Siberia and how did it relate to climate/vegetation/human activity? 🔥
Now out in E&G Quaternary Science Journal: a thesis abstract summarizing main findings from my dissertation. Big thanks to the German Quaternary Association (DEUQUA)!https://doi.org/10.5194/egqsj-74-101-2025

From 2021: #Indigenous Leaders Speak Out About #Criminalization and #Silencing by #Putin Administration
"Indigenous organizations in Russia, allied organizations, and #CulturalSurvival have released an Open Letter to the Putin administration sounding an alarm about the growing intimidations and reprisals against #IndigenousActivists and rights defenders in Russia.
"These attacks are exemplified by the recent illegal detention of activist #AndreiDanilov (#Sámi) in the #Murmansk region. Danilov, Director of the Sámi Heritage and Development Foundation, was detained on August 29, 2021. Andrei Danilov was unlawfully detained by the police after, fearing for his safety, he refused to present his belongings for inspection without witnesses. He was detained for five days, charged with 'failure to comply with the lawful order of a police officer.'
"Danilov’s arrest is just one of the latest incidents in a series of acts of harassment against Indigenous activists and rights defenders in Russia in recent years. Days before, another Indigenous rights defender #StepanPetrov was declared a 'foreign media acting as a foreign agent' in the Republic of #Sakha on August 20, 2021. The 2012 Russian law on foreign agents, originally created to restrict international funding to Russian NGOs, is now being used to target individuals. Stepan Petrov (Sakha) is the first Indigenous person in Russia to receive the 'foreign agent' label. Petrov chairs the nonprofit group #Yakutia – Our Opinion, which is well-known in the region of the Republic of Sakha for their human rights work. The activist submitted numerous appeals to the United Nations calling on the Russian government to adopt the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (#UNDRIP) and to support civil society in Russia."

If you a researcher of such topic as a use of occultism in modern politics – you probably will be interested in this story. Because it was a rare event for a modern world.
There are a lot of different types of blocks, censorship and shadow bans of organizations in Russia. But most common bans are these 3 types – “foreign agent” – that is a light version, “undesirable organization” – middle one and “terrorist organization” – hard one.
Unassociated with the state or oligarchs media get a foreign agent label – so no money, constant searches by cops etc. More problematic for regime organizations, like human rights protection – gets undesirable label – that is no activities under penal pressure. With terrorists one – it is self-explanatory.
And lately Russian authorities added “Satanic temple” into list of undesirable organizations. This occult society with provocative name is non-existent in Russia at all. You may ask – why bother? The answer is in the basis for this decision – “to oppose occult ideology that threatens traditional Russian values”.
How many countries in the world so openly going towards inquisition and witch-hunt trials? Probably Iran.. i am not even so sure about DPRK.
The reason why Putin’s state become more and more obsessed with the idea of witch hunts – is because it already has felt political resistance empowered by occult rites and regime did not like it.
Russia as other countries of Eastern Europe are famous with its interest towards occult. In Russia, historically, there was often a connection between politics and occultism and usually this connection works against the state power. E. Blavatskaya, who was born in Russian Empire, founded one of the most famous occult societies – Theosophic society.
So, it wasn’t too much of a surprise when a revolutionary shaman-warrior appeared.
It is a somewhat legendary figure now – Alexander Gabyshev. A shaman from Yakutia – east region of Russia. Shamanism is an indigenous religion there. Back in 2019 he started his way from Yakutia to Moscow to exile Demon-Putin with shamanic ritual. While he was moving towards Moscow – more and more people from all over the Russia joined him in his march. He said a prophecy in 2019 – “if regime arrests me – then there will be a war”. And oh boy he was right.
How a secular democracy would react to it – probably done nothing and let a dude do his ritual and pretend that nothing happens.
How a secular autocracy would react? – wait until shaman with his crowd gather somewhere and attack them for an unsanctioned meeting.
How did Putin’s Russia react? – Political police arrested Shaman for terrorism (!), tortured and beat him. Then sent him into most dreaded psychiatric asylum in Russia. It is like arkham asylum but in Siberia, located in the middle of frozen wasteland. Constant forced sedative drugs use, tortures, beatings and humiliation – that is how life is there. Since he is considered mentally ill - he doesn’t even have a semblance of any rights in juridical system, like other political prisoners. Several times they let him go for a little while, thinking that they have broken his will for resistance – but every time he immediately tried to resume his march towards Moscow. In 2021 regime placed him indefinitely into mental hospital. So basically for life.
The regime overreacted, probably got scared. Its uncanny actions created a story, that is more suitable in fiction books or movies, then in real life – but nevertheless it exists. And since then a pressure against occultism has become more deliberate, it is now a reappearing theme in regular xenophobic nonsense and culture war bullsh*t, that regime spreads and supports by its fascist repressive laws.
I hope that regime won’t kill him, like Navalny or break his will, making him support Putin or war in Ukraine. Though who knows how long a human being can endure such suffering like politically motivated punishing psychiatry with torture methods inherited from Stalin’s great terror time. He stays there for 3 years already. But here is a link to an article about him, if you want to know more - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Gabyshev

Residents of Yakutia have been without access to Telegram and WhatsApp for the second day. The Roskomnadzor disconnected the messengers due to protests in Yakutsk. Despite the dispersal of the protesters, internet access has not been restored. The head of Yakutia has been posting only about a Putin exhibition, provoking angry comments from people. #Yakutia #InternetCensorship

New #research paper just out: We simulated climate-driven #wildfires 🔥 and their impacts on forests in #Yakutia, eastern #Siberia, throughout ~20,000 years since the LGM ❄️ in the individual-based model LAVESI-FIRE 🌲
Results show stand-replacing fires decreasing larch dominance, and the occurrence of different post-fire regeneration pathways under similar fire regimes.
