  1. @HopelessDemigod I was definitely thinking of a smaller antenna :)

The #meshtastic #yagi is the size of a dinner plate, and connects to a few small boards.

Right now it's all on a desk pointing out a window. For a better view, the antenna needs to be outside on the patio. Maybe 3 meters of coax to connect my desk to the antenna.

#LMR600 would work, but it is also 0.6 inches diameter. The radio would almost fit inside the cable.

I should probably describe this as patch cable, given the short distances needed.

#HamRadio question: What types of #RF cable to buy and from where.

    Low power < 1 watt
    700 M to 5Ghz typical
    DC to 6G sometimes.
    Low loss is nice
    50 Ω

    Specific uses
    1) making #antennas with matching or stubs.
    Indoor and outdoor.
    900 mhz #yagi
    900 mhz folded #dipole

    2) connecting antennas on patio to indoor radio.

( 900 mhz, UV / weather resistant outdoor, fire resistant indoor. Possibly flat cable at door. Lightning arr.)

    3) connecting boards together indoors (filters, amps, SDR, etc)

    What I think that requires:

5 feet of moderately stiff cable for making antennas, #LMR 240/400 or equiv?

10-20 feet of low-loss outdoor cable (not buried)

1-2 feet of thin / flat cable to pass around door.

10-20 feet low-loss indoor cable. Fire resistant?

10 feet thinner flexible indoor cable to interconnect boards.

Tools for cutting & crimping. SMA, RPSma, but ideally also other types (TNC, N, maybe BNC, maybe ufl)

Finn spent a decade constructing this colossal contraption in his backyard—because nothing screams midlife crisis like a 32x17 #Yagi monstrosity. 🤦‍♂️ Now he can talk to the moon while the rest of us are stuck debating if we should upgrade our Wi-Fi routers. 🌙📶

  37. @FediThing

I grew up listening to shortwave radio. I learned how to make antennas too. The proper length of antenna and electrically shortening or lengthening it with a capacitor or inductor. I would also learn how to take a #balun and make covert directional and #yagi antennas, something that might be very important if signals are jammed during a total fascist takeover. Cable, connectors, and makeshift insulators and RF iron cores, stocking up on these DIY antenna parts might be quite useful during the dark days ahead. Also, learning #MorseCode never goes out of style.

Danke. Ja, brauch nur noch einen neuen Stock ... <hüstel> ... Mast.

So. I was still not really nice with my last yagi antenna, which I have built lately.

I have chosen another build, which I found on printables.

    This one:
    printables.com/model/979820-10

After several hours of printing, it's finally ready. It was hard to tune it properly. Best I got SWR 1,21 and impedance of 59+j3 Ohm. Not what I hoped to get. But I installed it.

I think that the link to my next meshcore repeater improved with more than 4 dB. But I have to check it over time.
