仕事で Linux をメイン機として 20 年近く使ってきたんだけど、ついに（？）macOS を使う羽目になりそう…。Mac は私用でこれまた 20 年近く使っていたから学習曲線（learning curve）は低いけど、Linux/KDE の種々の便利機能が macOS では再現できないことも知っている。一番イヤなのは、ハイライトでコピー、ミドルクリックでペーストという X Window の機能が macOS にないこと。これまじで便利なんだよな…。

他にも必要なソフトが apt でほぼすべて手に入るとか、デスクトップエリアを右クリックするとアプリ ランチャーがポップアップするようカスタマイズできるとか、とにかく Linux/KDE に慣れていると他の OS は不便すぎるのよ…。

Продолжая тему "что можно сделать из обычной ТВ-приставки" - можно сделать, например, очень экономичный и компактный десктоп. В обычной жизни такое может быть никогда и не понадобится, но всякое в жизни бывает... Питание такого компьютера - всего 5в, его можно подключить к аккумулятору через обычную USB-автозарядку, в сочетании с 12-вольтовым монитором получится этакий "компьютер для автономщика", если конечно вы дружите с Линуксом. В общем, идея была собрать максимально недорогой и компактный десктоп, с возможностью питания от аккумулятора.

In the days of Sun-3 and other early #UNIX #workstations, the #XWindow System had one window manager, the "twm" (Tom's Window Manager). The only "apps" we used, then, were XTerm, XClock, and XEyes. Some used the XCalc, but I just used the \(\texttt{dc}\) RPN calculator in XTerm, which is more convenient, and is scriptable.

I miss those simpler times, when we still held on to our #VT100, just in case.

#myfirstdistro was #Slackware in 97ish. I was going to school for CS, and even thought I bought a C compiler for my Amiga, it was too different to use for school assignments. A classmate introduced me to the idea of trying #Linux . I picked up Slackware because it sounded neat. It took me 3-4 days to get #Xwindow working on a Compaq laptop, but I got it working, and that was the start of my long journey with Linux. Slackware teaches you a lot about how Linux works.

Since we’re on the subject of #Gnome today, their potential stopping support for X Window in a year or so makes sense.

X is legacy and in maintenance mode, if I remember correctly, and #Wayland is meant to be its successor.

Wayland has been around for a very long time now, has modern features X lacks, is more secure, and it is very stable and well supported in Gnome. It’s time to move forward. 🙂

Is there an expert on #linux #ubuntu (22.04 Gnome with remote desktop and legacy) #VNC or maybe #XWindow who can tell me why I can't type shifted characters after I log in on VNC? Weirdly I can type shifted characters in the screensaver, but not on the command line or GEdit after login.

Ok, we have the Primary Selection buffer, we have the more traditional (to those who didn't grow up with #XWindow) Clipboard, but what the heck is the #Secondary buffer?! (xclip -o -selection secondary)
