With LXQt I have rediscovered the joys of screensavers !!

Questions for linux users:

1. I wonder why one no longer finds screensavers in modern OSes. Is it just a fashion thing?

2. With increasing adoption of wayland, I wonder if any replacements/lookalikes are in the works. I really hope so!

Does anyone have more info ?

Ok, a little bit of debugging and verbose xscreensaver brought me to the suspicion that the cvlc command itself is at fault: it inhibits xscreensaver, immediately unlocking the screen again, doing so regularly. I need a command line option for cvlc to ALLOW the screensaver. No inhibit needed. Question: IS there an option to allow screensavers in cvlc??

I installed it, got #xscreensaver somehow integrated into Cinnamon, disabled the built in "screensaver", which does only blanking. But I notice that xscreensaver does not activate. Manually locking the screen reveals why: It seems the laptop generates lots of spurious input events at random intervals. Why??? And why does the original Cinnamon screensaver work fine? Can I use xev to listen for those events? And can I make xscreensaver ignore those? I doubt they are useful events.

#XScreenSaver, suite : la version 6.13 ramène un ancien bug en faisant échouer le déverrouillage de session (alors que le mot de passe entré est bon) !

Cette nuit, avant d’éteindre les ordis et de me coucher, MAJ dud système et notamment de #XScreenSaver qui passe en 6.13, et dont le changelog indique :

“Rewrote **glslideshow** to add more image-transition effects.”

Syndrome XKCD 1172 immédiat (j’avais pas demandé à ce que les transitions entre les images du diaporama changent ; et encore moins qu’on puisse pas les désactiver ! 😭).

This is #fun, #informative, maybe an example of some kind of #hacking #left which we should develop socially (in order to confront against an increasingly decadent #capitalism), and also maybe a good entry-point to learn about an interesting person and #history episodes...

@airikr Nostalgic images for my screensaver on my very early-2000s themed setup. You can use a feed of images as a source of images in #xscreensaver.

Making a Flickr account so I can get an API key so I can get pre-2009 images for my #xscreensaver.

The choice of language isn't going to help much if the people writing the rusty replacements for decades-old tools don't bother to understand the security issues and attack surfaces that led to the design of those tools in the first place.

Similarly, Linux distributions shipping #screensaver implementations that are essentially nothing but a login-bypass mechanism that wastes CPU/GPU cycles.

#AfterDark was crazy legit. Before it, screensavers just had one screensaver, with maybe a little bit of configurability, but not much. Of course, the very first ones just blanked the screens, I think, then a few later ones drew moire patterns, lines, maybe fireworks, and basic stuff like that.

AfterDark had all of these crazy modules, and just got crazier and more off the rails over the years. I even had a Star Trek: The Next Generation themed AfterDark screensaver for windows in the mid-90s.

Of course, now we have #XScreensaver, which totally "o'erfloweth the measure." That has a better "Flying Toasters" than even the original.

I just wish there'll be a Wayland port someday. %P
