    🙏

    ------
Looking for a Linux distro with a macOS‑like desktop experience – both UI and overall UX – so it feels smooth and pleasant to use every day
    🍏🐧
It also needs to work reliably with xrdp, so I can connect directly from Windows using the built‑in Remote Desktop client without extra tools
    🖥️
If you have any distro + desktop environment combos that work well, or xrdp setup tips, please share your experience
    🙏

    ------
    🙏

  3. #xrdp + #mesa3d + #zink at the moment is the most capable remote graphical desktop solution I can think of. #Vulkan had off-screen rendering and heterogenous renderer source/sink built in from day one, so if there's a Vulkan capable GPU around you got Vulkan graphics with plain Xrdp. Combining it with Zink (and forcing its use through two environment variables) will also accelerate OpenGL. The only thing that does not work is CUDA graphics interop.

  5. @jhx For writing some kind of "howto", I'll have to find a sane scope ... otherwise there would be just too much to describe I guess 😮

I could of course assume you already have

    - network segmentation with a
    - a working "domain" setup with a directory and (e.g. , but could be with as well)
    - (virtual) machines providing (with in case of or )
    - a working mechanism to distribute X.509 (I request them from using and distribute them with simple shell scripts using special-purpose restricted keys)

With all that in place, it would "just" be describing the setup of in a , enabling on all connection paths...

  6. Just did a quick feasibility test connecting to a remote desktop from a browser running in the network of my employer ... working perfectly fine with my old DSL-50 connection 🥳

I think #firewalls these days are a bit silly, whatever they don't allow must be forced to work via #http (or better #https) instead 😂 -- and #guacamole is really a nice solution to do this for remote desktops. But as it's acting as a #gateway also handling #authentication, I finally feel comfortable making a connection with #xrdp accessible, which still doesn't support #NLA. When you see the "login screen" in guacamole, you are already authenticated ... so this feature lack is downgraded from a severe security concern to a mild annoyance (having to type your password again).

  9. My development environment for now:

    1. Mac (with macOS) + Microsoft Remote Desktop, using Tailscale for easy access to:
    2. Linux PC running @UniversalBlue Bazzite, effectively working full-time as a VM host for:
    3. GNOME Boxes (@gnomeboxes), with development-ready @xubuntu 24.04 and testing daily builds of 24.04 minimal and desktop ISOs

Everything works together so nicely and makes working from anywhere convenient and easy.

  11. Notes on Setting up Xrdp PulseAudio on Fedora Silverblue

I’ve been playing with Bazzite inside Proxmox, and that led me to try and set up xrdp with glamor and pulseaudio on a new, headless Fedora Silverblue VM that I intend to use as a ML sandbox.(...)
