How much I have understanding for #linux needs for #xserver replacement with #wayland it is far away from being done and I feel sometimes it is step back to 90s in terms of functionality. To get it working in headless container setup with vnc is more like engineering feast than easy job done. Not mentioning we don’t have alternative for #xrdp. How much someone might hate Microsoft, RDP protocol is superior to anything else. With this we have ditched in wayland setups, sound, remote printers, local drives, etc. I just want to cry 😢

#xrdp + #mesa3d + #zink at the moment is the most capable remote graphical desktop solution I can think of. #Vulkan had off-screen rendering and heterogenous renderer source/sink built in from day one, so if there's a Vulkan capable GPU around you got Vulkan graphics with plain Xrdp. Combining it with Zink (and forcing its use through two environment variables) will also accelerate OpenGL. The only thing that does not work is CUDA graphics interop.

Also alle Anwendungen starten, so wie sie sollen (vor allem auch Programme mit Passworteingaben (pkexec oder seahorse bspw).
Würde mich über Tipps freuen!
Bevorzugter Desktop Cinnamon oder Xfce, aber kein Muss.
Aktuell bin ich mit xrdp im Rennen.

POC: #RedHat :redhat: Enterprise #Linux 9 Workstation running on #Proxmox VE with #xrdp and #Apache #Guacamole to access it internally (or via #wireguard VPN) via the Web Browser.

Running smoothly, fast enough and is a good self-hosted "cloud desktop" to do some work on on-the-go.

Initially only an experiment, but I'm really satisfied with the result and will keep it as a remote workstation 🙂

@verbumfeit #Xrdp, #tigervnc and tried to set up a #RustDesk Server (which definitely failed). Xrdp and tigervnc would connect to a blank screen. With Ctrl+Alt+T you could open a terminal and start the programs from there, as I found out #plasma6 #wayland doesn't support rdp yet. So only for rdp stuff I use #gnome and connect with #xrdp

I could of course assume you already have

- network segmentation with a #DMZ
- a working "domain" setup with a directory and #DNS (e.g. #samba, but could be #OpenLDAP with #bind9 as well)
- (virtual) machines providing #RDP (with #xrdp in case of #Linux or #FreeBSD)
- a working mechanism to distribute X.509 #TLS #certificates (I request them from #letsencrypt using #uacme and distribute them with simple shell scripts using special-purpose restricted #SSH keys)

With all that in place, it would "just" be describing the setup of #guacamole in a #FreeBSD #jail, enabling #TLS on all connection paths...

Just did a quick feasibility test connecting to a remote desktop from a browser running in the network of my employer ... working perfectly fine with my old DSL-50 connection 🥳

I think #firewalls these days are a bit silly, whatever they don't allow must be forced to work via #http (or better #https) instead 😂 -- and #guacamole is really a nice solution to do this for remote desktops. But as it's acting as a #gateway also handling #authentication, I finally feel comfortable making a connection with #xrdp accessible, which still doesn't support #NLA. When you see the "login screen" in guacamole, you are already authenticated ... so this feature lack is downgraded from a severe security concern to a mild annoyance (having to type your password again).

How could I live without a Browser ... IN MY BROWSER ... for so long? 🤔 😜
