Today's historic photo of the day: The northbound Riverina #XPT runs through the station at Binalong, NSW, November 2 1985.
Binalong is 354km south-west of Sydney on the NSW main South railway, which is also the main Sydney to Melbourne interstate line. The station building seen here is actually the second station in Binalong. The line was duplicated and deviated in 1915 bypassing the original 1876 station.

The XPT only arrived 5 minutes after it was supposed to depart this morning so I guess its no surprise we're stopped just past Picton when we're supposed to be at Central.

Getting the train from Sydney down to Melbourne last Tuesday, was pretty chuffed to see 3 XPTs (squint harder!) and all lined up at Central. Of course an Xplorer had to photo bomb tho'.

Während in den Ballungszentren rund um Städte wie #Melbourne und #Sydney beachtliche Kapazitäten auf der Schiene unterwegs sind, ist der #Fernverkehr in Australien eher ein Nischenprodukt für den Abenteuertourismus. Die Züge sind langsam, oft schon lange im Voraus ausgebucht und verkehren nur wenige Male am Tag.
Ein so ein Produkt ist der schon in die Jahre gekommene #XPT in New South Wales. Für den Nachtverkehr lässt sich ein 1. Klasse-Wagen in einen Schlafwagen umwandeln.

Behold the fabled snack box aboard the XPT train! OK don't get too excited. Note particularly the crackers and chutney - but no cheese. I assume the cheese was once the victim of a budget cutback.

On the XPT sleeper train back to Melbourne, and I seem to have the compartment to myself. First time ever! Also it appears we'll leave on time, which is novel.

@AWStephen the sound of the fighting cats trapped in the walls near the bogies as the #XPT wobbles its way along the poorly maintained rails between NSW and Victoria really helps lull you to sleep.

Yes!Major cities more or less in a row, at distances that make sense for HSR (& regular speed night trains), and the cities have good local rail transit.
Sounds pretty much ideal.

Back home in Melbourne! Great holiday but even better to be home 😀
Thank you NSW TrainLink, despite the delays, I really enjoyed all of it (except where you turfed me out of a sleeping compartment and onto a bus at 3am because your train was broken, still bitter on that).
For those who are interested, I plan to write a more comprehensive blog post (my first since pre-COVID) on the trip in the near future.

Dubbo bound XPT near Tarana this morning. Also, TIL it's pronounced Ta-ra-na, not Tah-rah-nah

Made it to Dubbo! Why? Because I've never done this journey before.
Dubbo is the terminus for the Central West XPT from Sydney, which is the only XPT service where the same set does a return journey in one day.
Now, straight back on the same train to Bathurst.
