Mise à jour du portable #Xps13 sur #Fedora avec passage de la 42 à la 43 en une petite vingtaine de minutes.
Propre et rapide.
Je n'utilise plus beaucoup cette machine mais même a plus de 10 ans d'âge, elle tient encore très bien la route (bon sauf la batterie qui elle ne tient même plus une heure).
J'attends ce week-end pour migrer la machine principale et faire le tour des nouveautés #Gnome.

Hello dear fediverse, I seek out your wisdom, especially in the foss community. I have a VERY particular problem that I decided to come to you all with!
I have a dell xps laptop that will reset the BIOS whenever it dies from battery going to 0%
got the laptop for cheap, it is quite old, I essentially saved it from being ewaste, so I would like to take care of it as best as I can, so "get a new laptop" is not going to fix my problems
Dell got this LOVELY feature where it will "raid" the disks automatically when the bios is reset. Truly lovely feature. The BIOS will also gracefully reset the settings of the laptop and lose my boot partition so I have to manually enter it (I have gotten really good at EFI due to this, but I digress). My two things would be:
1) remove the RAID chip from the mobo to avoid it from trying to do that again, not sure if that would break it completely or how viable that is. I can turn it off in BIOS, sure, but it will go BACK to the setting no matter how I save, truly a feature of "I will fix the computer for you!!!"
2) install libreboot
I am very aware that both options can brick the laptop in question, so please, if anyone has a similar issue and know a better fix or have experience, send help :bunsad:

Hmm, sounds like Dell are killing the XPS line.
I've had 2 XPS13 machines (shipped with Linux pre-installed) and they've been great, but looks like next replacement personal machine will likely be another ThinkPad X1 Carbon (the current work machine)

Noch mal eine Frage: Ich würde mir gerne demnächst einen neuen #Laptop zulegen, scheitere aber gerade ein wenig bei der Suche.
Die Herausforderung scheint zu sein, dass ich unbedingt #Linux haben will und gerne dazu eine akzeptable GFX Karte, die auch ein wenig #Steam Zockerei erlaubt. Gerne klein, ich habe einen Dell #XPS13 9320 und mag dessen Größe sehr.
Habe bei #Dell und Lenovo #Thinkpad nachgeschaut.. So richtig was passendes habe ich jetzt nicht gefunden. Entweder sehr groß, oder ohne vernünftige GFX Karte oder halt nicht sicher Linux kompatibel.
Hat jemand Tips, was ich mir mal ansehen könnte?
* Linux (idealer Weise Ubuntu) kompatibel ohne riesige Kopfstände.
* Eine "vernünftige" GFX Karte
* Gut transportabel, also eher möglichst klein und leicht.
* Vernünftige Tasstatur (die Leuchteleiste der XPS Laptops ist echt unangenehm). -

Benutzt hier eigentlich jemand den #Dell #XPS13Plus 9320 mit #Ubuntu?
Ich hatte mir den Ende letzten Jahres extra deswegen zugelegt, weil die Ubuntu Unterstützung offenbar hervorragend sein sollte (https://www.computerbase.de/2022-07/dell-xps-13-plus-developer-edition-ubuntu-22-04-lts/).
Ich muss sagen: Das ist so ziemlich der am schlechtesten mit Ubuntu funktionierende Laptop, den ich je hatte. Ich hatte vorher mehrere Jahre einen XPS15 von Dell, der echt prima mit Ubuntu über mehrere Versionen lief, deshalb hielt ich den Kauf für einen NoBrainer.
Aber weit gefehlt.
* Man fühlt sich hier langsam wie ein Beta Tester, der eine noch nicht zu Ende getestete Spiele-Konsole gekauft hat. Gerade am Anfang kamen immer wieder BIOS Updates rein, die manches Problem fixten, aber dann neue oder alte wieder einführten.
* Am Anfang hatte ich das "lustige" Problem, dass längeres Drücken von Tasten den Lüfter startete.. Ernsthaft! Du schreibst zB etwas mit gedrückter Shift Taste und der Lüfter springt an, obwohl 0 Last auf der CPU ist. Ließ man die Shift Taste wieder los, ging der Lüfter wieder aus. Unfassbar, wurde glücklicher Weise in einem der vielen BIOS Updates gefixt..
* Immer mal wieder sporadische Freezes, in denen das Interface für 15-30s einfriert und dann einfach weiter macht. Der Rechner ist dann nicht tot (Sounds laufen zB weiter), aber es wird auf nichts mehr reagiert. Das Problem wird an vielen Stellen im Netz schon länger reported, scheinbar nicht nur mit dem aktuellen #XPS13. Das ging mit einigen BIOS Updates nahezu weg, ist jetzt aber anstrengend oft wieder da.
* Ich habe gerade nur mit Kopfstand Zugriff auf meine WebCam. Es gibt gerade 2 Möglichkeiten: Im Chrome Browser (FF findet die Cam schon nicht) oder mit Cheese, wenn ich die per root mit einem Zusatzparameter starte. Das scheint ebenfalls ein ewig existierendes Problem zu sein. Discord Client findet die Cam zB nicht, discord mache ich gerade im Webinterface in Chrome ..
* Besonders nervig gerade: Wenn ich mit der Maus über den Screen in einer bestimmten Höhe streife, kommt ein Kriselstreifen (dünner Bereich weißen Rauschens) auf den Screen, der dann wieder weg geht, wenn ich den Bereich wieder verlasse. Das Problem kam erst mit einem der letzten Updates (wobei ich da nicht sicher bin, ob BIOS oder DELL Treiber).
Alles in allem ist es mir ein absolutes Rätsel, wie der Rechner eine "Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Zertifizierung" bekommen konnte. So eine Ansammlung an Problemen, die laut Web ja auch schon ewig existieren, hatte ich mit einem Rechner mit Ubuntu noch nie.
Der Rechner ist (aus gutem Grund) ein nicht ganz günstiges Markenprodukt. Ich verdiene damit mein Geld. Was man dafür inzwischen bekommt, ist wirklich schlimm. Ich muss mal sehen, was da über Warranty etc geht, denn ich habe ihn natürlich als "Windows Rechner" gekauft.. -
