  1. As of 4:30 UTC on July 14, 2024 this is the location of the three NASA stratospheric balloons currently in flight.

A recovery team from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility is currently waiting in the city of Yellowknife to fly to the landing spots of the payloads and balloons in the next few days.

  2. After crossing the Atlantic Ocean, balloon mission 739N transporting the XL-CALIBUR experiment is flying above Greenland.

The NASA balloon was launched from ESRANGE in Sweden, on July 9 and so far has been aloft for 2 days and a half flying at a mean altitude of 123.000 ft.

  3. In the same time frame, the other balloon in flight (the XL-CALIBUR mission) also experienced a loss of altitude but it was half of the loss experienced by SUNRISE III.

We must consider too that XL-CALIBUR is flying at higher latitude and a little higher altitude (due to balloon size) and could be less affected by the cooling effect of lower-angle solar radiation.

    Nothing conclusive yet.

  4. The XL-CALIBUR telescope transports two "piggyback" missions:

IRCSP (Infrared Channeled Spectro-Polarimeter): A technology development by University of Arizona for spectro-polarimetric measurements of cloud tops.

WALRUSS (Wallops Atmospheric Light Radiation and Ultraviolet Spectrum Sensor): A NASA Wallops development for a sensor capable of measuring the total UV and ozone concentration.

  5. 12 hours into the flight, XL-CALIBUR balloon is flying above the North Atlantic Ocean at 125.000 ft.

  7. XL-CALIBUR reached a float altitude of 130.000 ft and started its first observational runs. Livestream showing nothing at this time.

Balloon entering the Norwegian airspace soon. In a few more hours it will be entering the Atlantic Ocean.

    End of coverage for now.

Thank you for joining me, and welcome aboard to the new followers.

  10. Good news. The payload has been moved to the launch pad, and helium trailers and balloon hardware are being positioned.

However, it is too early. Last good sign will be the balloon deployment ....that is a pint of no return of the operations.
