XJ test drive went well. I've got a few loose ends to wrap up. I have to find new hardware to hold the exhaust together, install some little brackets that help route wiring, etc. Pretty excited though. Interestingly, I'm not seeing the power I was hoping for... not sure if the ECU needs time to adapt or if my exhaust (factory 2001 exhaust to the cat) is too restrictive, etc. I haven't done a WOT pull yet while the engine breaks in, so maybe that's part of it.

Well... after assembling this other engine (after learning the TJ short block wont work well in my XJ), on a hunch, I checked the pushrod length - it seemed like there was excessive preload on the hydraulic lifters. Turns out, they were 0.200" too long.
I figure this difference is from the aftermarket (Hesco) head, and roller rockers. Either way, the correct rods are in the mail.

(because asked)
A non-invasive, non-destructive, clip-on #CB or #GMSR #radio mount for the #Jeep #Cherokee #XJ
The necessary materials are the radio factory bracket, and a 2-1/4" 18ga Zinc plated strip (Hillman, $20 at most hardware stores, SKU 5215876 at home depot)... and a rattle can =)
Cutting and bending the strap isn't hard, smaller "hook" at the end is slightly annoying. But it allows for your CB to be placed right by passenger side of shifter, handy, without drilling or cutting.

So, now they had a different style JP plate, akin to the original movie's #TJ Wranglers. About a year or so ago they brought back a newer version of the JP-logo-on-black plate.
Context: in the original books, Jurassic Park had gas-powered TJ Wranglers - NO FORD EXPLORERS, EVER - and people organizing a rescue expedition in book 2 ( "Lost World" ) were driving hybrid-electric #XJ Cherokees.
I've had the old version of JP-logo-on-black plate, since Universal Studios Orlando opened. It was on the XJ front bumper, then went to the rear plate holder, when it was hidden by the off road tire-carrier. Now, the JP-number plates are in the rear, behind carrier, and the much older JP-on-the back to the front bumper, on a winch flip-mount.
My kids call the XJ "dinosaur car" since they could barely walk.

Random picture of one of my Jeeps (2001 Cherokee). This picture was taken in 2014 on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula near Lanse-Aux-Meadows. Took the family on a big overlanding trip through New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.

It has a very, very simple ECU, solid state, which handles EFI (fuel injection).
It has a stereo headunit that reads CDs (yes) and MP3s from a USB stick (that I formatted and wrote) ; it is connected to the speakers and nothing else. I added a #CB #radio for trail comms.
It never spies on me. Can't be tracked or hacked remotely, because there is nothing to be tracked or hacked.
Buttons are BUTTONS. The transmission and transfer case have steel cables connecting the shifter to the lever on the transmission and transfer case bodies, to shift gears. The differentials are steel and fluid, zero electronics. The key (yes, physical) doesn't transmit anything, and when I insert it into the tumbler, and turn it, the engine cranks to life.
Cars should NOT be spying tools of a fascist Big Brother state.

Taking the #Toyota #MR2 #AW11 away for winter storage at a friend's house.
I need to make room in the garage for #Jeep #Cherokee #XJ and #Mazda #Miata #MX5 #NA projects this winter.
Kind of conflicted. A little early perhaps but I haven't been driving the car much so might as well reduce the insurance load for a bit.

@booty I got a D35 in the rear, D30 front in the JKU, it's a Sahara. The Rubicon offers a D44 *option*. The Sport and Sahara versions have 3.73 ratio gears (same as #XJ). Lower trims have... lesser options.
My XJ has a C8.25 in the rear (it was a conversion from 2WD to 4x4, the tow pkg option also offers that) and a D30 front, 3.73ratios. It goes places, looots of places. =)
People give a lot of shit to D35s and D30s, but mostly I find that is the "short-dick-compensating" syndrome, characterized by accessorizing-uber-alles that plagues the Shopping Mall Crawler community of "jeep".
#FWIW, #YMMV #AYBATU, #NGGYUNGLD
Adding a locker to the factory diffs (if they don't already have them) allows for a 3.73 D35 to outperform a D44 that has "electronic" (i.e., brakes do the job) traction control only.
I like #Torsen type diff lockers, because of their hands-off trait. They are more expensive, but so worth it. Other types according to your preferences, obvs.

@booty 😂
The #XJ is a '99, toy status, sporting very very well used 31x10.5 MTZ Bajas. It has saved my ass more times than I care to count.
The #JK is a '11, sees a LOT of use, and I keep it in all-weather Cooper Discoverers, but eyeballing moving to AW/AT on a regular basis. I have gnarlier threads for it, but no likee the rubber. It's currently my fave ride.
The #WK is a '05, new comer to the herd, it came with Toyo all-weathers that I do NOT like, and will change, as soon as I go through the myriad of issues I want to take care of, first. Got it for the wife, she is an airhead, drives through iffy areas, and the all-time 4x4 helps, without the growliness of the other stuff. .
#Jeep life.

@evshift I admit to being conflicted about IH Scout being bought/used by #VW and I'm a VW / #Audi fan.
I still have #International #Scout parts lying around... the rear axle in my #Jeep #Cherokee #XJ is from an IH Scout.
I don't dislike the styling shown. A #plugin #hybrid like the new #Toyota #LandCruiser #TLC could be interesting. So complex... Chances of getting a modern 345cid IH engine? Ha.
Real axle(s)?
Will probably be modern junk like the new #GrandWagoneer
