I was thinking about something recently. I'm not really into probabilities and statistics and not really interested in economics too so game theory isn't something that really intrigued me overall.

However, I quite like chess and other pure strategy games like that. I know combinatorial game theory is a thing and seems to avoid the link with probabilities with instead a focus on combinatorics (which I like a lot more). Is it really the case? And more precisely, is studying chess in this field mathematically interesting?

I'm asking because I started to play Xiangqi (chinese equivalent of chess). I thought it might be a fun idea to discover results and articles about chess in combinatorial game theory and try to apply the same ideas to Xiangqi. But eventually, I don't know how interesting it can really be.
