  1. IFS (Interim File server) was an early network protocol suite developed at Xerox PARC and based around the PUP Ethernet protocol (PARC Universal Packet). This is an implementation of IFS for modern systems that is designed to work with the ContrAlto Xerox Alto emulator.

  2. I'm trying out ContrAlto, a great emulator of the Xerox Alto 1970s personal computer. The folks at PARC sure knew how to have fun and poke fun.

ContrAlto runs fine on my Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon box but requires Microsoft .NET 8.0. It doesn't work with other versions of .NET or Mono. I installed just the runtime, not the full .NET.

    > Tech Spec Tuesday: Xerox Alto (1973): the machine that defined modern computing. GUI, mouse, Ethernet, WYSIWYG… it had it all, decades ahead of its time. The blueprint for today’s personal computer started at Xerox. #VintageComputer #XeroxAlto

  4. It is widely known that the #XeroxAlto pioneered many aspects of modern computing, or at least integrated them into the #userInterface we still use today.

But it also featured the first #modalEditor with #Bravo (although they eventually replaced it with the modeless #BravoX).

  5. Using the mouse-driven graphical user interface of a personal computer to write a document with a WYSIWYG word processor, check new messages with an email client, and create an organization chart with a drawing program. Just an ordinary day at Xerox PARC in 1978. When email spam was apparently already a thing.

The demo features the Alto workstation and the Bravo word processor. You can hear the noise of the hard disk.

  6. How the developers of Bravo at Xerox PARC overcame the limitations of Alto to design the first WYSIWYG editor and make it run efficiently.

  8. It’s not every day I get to play with a Xerox Alto thanks to the people at The Computer Museum in Maryland! I suck at Missile Command BTW. Great exhibit space and worth a visit! #RetroComputing #XeroxAlto

  9. The Xerox Alto, which debuted in the early spring of 1973, is uncannily familiar today, because we are living in a world of computing that the Alto created. Here's how the Alto came to be.

  10. So insightful! Butler Lampson's memo at Xerox propounding the various innovative features of Alto and why its use should be expanded. ✍

  11. The many innovations that came from Xerox Alto: Ethernet, GUI, SmallTalk, WYSIWYG word processing (MS Word), DynaBook (tablet computer), HyperCard, PostScript.

  12. Fantastic #IEEESpectrum article on the Xerox Alto personal computer and the many innovations that came from it to revolutionize personal computing.

Bonus: the article has gorgeous photos of the Alto in use at Xerox in the 1970s.

One thing missing from the article is that Steve Jobs would spend much of his life taking credit for the innovations he stole from PARC and the Alto.

  14. This looks to be the exact #LOGO turtle that was used at my school when I was young. It’s from a video by Computer History Museum called Yesterday's Computer of Tomorrow: The Xerox Alto │Smalltalk-76 Demo where Dan Ingalls walks through using Smalltalk-76. The video ends with a tour of the Learning Research Group (LRG) at Xerox PARC that shows the turtle next to a giant roll of paper for the turtle to draw on. 🐢 #RetroComputing #VintageComputing #XeroxPARC #XeroxAlto #PenPlotter
