The last two months I have been typing a relatively short introduction to XBRL from a technical point of view. The need to knows of the XML underneath, how a taxonomy is built and how to create an instance.

So now I'm the sucker who has read almost all the specifications. (1 spec to go) Time to start all over again now that the overview is complete. Also time for my pension and let someone else read through it all over again. #xbrl #reporting #datamodeling #knowledge

University of Michigan: U-M develops free tool to empower municipalities, modernize financial reporting. “When Congress passed the Financial Data and Transparency Act in 2022, it required most municipalities in the U.S. to modernize and digitize their financial reports. This is a heavy lift for small towns and school districts, most of which still report their financial information in PDF […]

Bit of a wild shot in the dark, but can anyone recommend me some reading on #XBRL , specifically I want to learn more about how Global Ledger works if there is anything out there?

FERC to start distributing their largest dataset in the least convenient possible format. The EQR is already ~100GB in uncompressed CSVs. In XBRL that would be maybe a TB? With the XML of each filing having to be parsed individually are we going to have to spin up a whole cluster just to get it converted to Parquet in less than a day?

Very excited to announce v2024 of our ALTOVA software which introduces brand new #AI Assistants in multiple products as well as long-awaited support for #PDF data integration in MapForce. Other features include Markdown editing support, split output preview for business report creation, support for new #XBRL standards, and much more.

Another update to our #FERC #XBRL extractor (v1.2.0).
It turns out that the same utility can refile the same form multiple times per day, and not all facts may be contained in every filing, so deduplicating the data is non-trivial, and best done later in the ETL process. So now the extracted SQLite DB is a more complete (and more complex) conversion of every piece of information contained in the XBRL RSS feeds, even if it's duplicative or internally inconsistent.

This will excite only a very niche audience, but we've released v1.0 of our #FERC #XBRL extraction library, which consumes the taxonomies and filings published by FERC via RSS and uses them to build #SQLite databases that are much more amenable to analytical usage. it works for FERC Forms 1, 2, 6, 60, and 714 which started using XBRL in 2021. We're now working on integrating the 2022 data.

The FERC data mess is never going to end. 😭
Last week a user found some randomly missing values in the SQLite DB we generate from FERC's XBRL that *do* appear in the PDFs generated by the FERC eLibrary. It looks like this is because utilities are submitting XBRL that doesn't conform to the taxonomy, but FERC still accepts the filings. This affects ~7% of the 2.2 million values reported in the 2021 Form 1.

Accidentally dragged my finger too long while browsing a site via #Brave and up popped up an “inline #XBRL viewer.” Whaaaa? Then I remembered: “#RDFa for business.” Amazingly still a thing, even after 20+ years.. #SemanticWeb @semanticweb

Woo! Draft deployment of our extracted #FERC #XBRL data using @simon's #Datasette. Including 2021 data for FERC forms 1, 2, 6, 60, and 714. Still need to clean up the metadata, but hey it's a relational DB usable for analysis and transformation... not a bunch-o-gigabytes of XML. #sqlite #OpenData #EnergyTwitter #EnergyMastodon #PUDL

@praxis Well, I worked for about 10 years in the #MapForce Team of #Altova https://www.altova.com/mapforce and I simply loved to integrate various standards like #XBRL #OOXML (Excel) and the internal engine for executing mapping. Furthermore code generators for #CSharp , #Java, #Cpp and exotic stuff like #XSLT and even #XQuery.
In a #ComputerVision startup company (2000-2006) I played around with #ObjectDetection #Fingerprint and used #SupportVectorMachine which were modern in that years.

I am an energy economist at #FERC, a smaller US agency. I work on improving the #data my agency collects, making it better before we receive it, & increasing the transparency for the public. FERC does a lot of high profile things with #energy specifically with #LNG but I don't get involved in that work.

The 2021 #FERC Form 1 data has been more recalcitrant, since they've switched to using #XBRL for reporting (after 27 years of Visual FoxPro...), but we're close!
It looks like there's enough structured information in the XBRL taxonomies that we can reproduce all the calculations and tag the data with the relevant FERC accounting categories.
