‘Of concern’: New COVID variant hits Australia.
University of South Australia professor of biostatistics Adrian Esterman said it was “very difficult” to get hold of data on Arcturus (XBB.1.16), but early indications suggested it could be as much as 20% more transmissible than the recent Kraken (XBB.1.5) variant.

A rather concerning article from TACT about the current state of COVID vaccines:
"New Study: Bivalent Booster Demonstrated No Efficacy Against Infection from the XBB Lineages. *Important Booster Considerations*"Some very interesting info about "the impact that each booster shot has on our immune system."

RT @tmprowell
If you or your kids have red, itchy or sticky eyes, it may actually be the latest #COVID19 variant, XBB.1.16 (#XBB116). Do a test. This is a symptom we didn’t see often with past #COVIDvariants, so it’s easy to mistake it for allergies. #MedTwitter -
Hospital cases spike as COVID ‘Arcturus’ strain rises
A new Omicron strain causing chaos in India is gaining strength in Victoria. And the XBB.1.16 strain, nicknamed Arcturus, has a different symptom.
-
A new strain dubbed Arcturus, XBB 1.16 has caused infections to skyrocket in India, prompting the World Health Organisation (WHO) to declare it a variant of interest.
There may also be an increased risk to children.
The additional mutations create the potential for the strain to infect more easily and potentially cause more severe disease, Dr Van Kerkhove said.
There may also be an increased risk to children.
Indian paediatrician, Dr Vipin Vashishtha, tweeted that paediatric cases were on the rise for the first time in 6 months, and that “an infantile phenotype seems emerging.”
In addition to high fever and coughs, which are common symptoms of Covid, Dr Vashishtha has also seen conjunctivitis among children presenting with the virus.
