CW: discussion of a problematic fantasy author, mentions of taboo non-legal sexuality, mentions of works with problematic themes
A reflection that's vaguely related to another discussion I just had: I wonder if it would be possible to write a #fanfic of #Xanth (or any other Piers Anthony book) that re-contextualizes and usefully responds in some way to the yucky themes of pedophilia and misogyny present in those works? I *think* a fix-fic of the mode series maybe? Or a rewrite of the adept series where people behave more realistically? A XANTH #fanfiction would just devolve into puns; XANTH isn't really trying to say anything anymore, and hasn't been for a long time. I think the thing that appeals to me about Piers Anthony's works to this day is that I still wish I could pretend the world works the way he thinks it does, even though I'm older and wiser and I know that it doesn't. So it could well be that a fic like this would be depressing anti-fun, at least if I wrote it. -
Wait, does #Xanth not have a 'Discriminate tree?' Haven't quite worked out what it would exactly do, as discriminating against everyone isn't technically discrimination at all but that's surely a pun for the taking.

Just finished The Light Fantastic and I am now thoroughly enthralled by the series, and Pratchett's writing style. I haven't had this much fun with fantasy since I first got into the #Xanth series years ago :content:

So it’s time to reread #discworld for the first time ever since I was a teenager. I normally dislike audiobooks and the first time I read discworld was as ebooks. But the new audio narrations feel worth it. And they’re free to me on CELA so I have nothing to lose. Starting at equal rights because starting at book 1 feels unfair based on my memories of the series. Let’s hope they hold up better than #xanth! #bookstodon

Somehow I don’t notice puns unless I slow down and sound them outI guess I read by word recognition, so they don’t register?
Not sure it was always the case. I read the #Xanth books as a kid which are basically all puns
Seemed to enjoy them at the time. But maybe I missed a lot?
Can’t remember names I read either. They just slide by. I have to stop and make lists

Resale shop find. $2. Never ready any of the Xanth books. I think I read Split Infinity and Blue Adept but didn't get too much farther.
