  2. I’ve done some experiments on my #FreeBSD laptop - a #Thinkpad #x260. I’m generally speaking a #Gnome person, but I wanted to dip my toes in something else.
#KDE #Plasma 6 on Wayland was beautiful, but way too slow to be usable on this hardware/OS combo.
But what do I like about Gnome? That it gets out of the way and lets me work.

You know what else gets out of the way? #Sway. It’s a lot more work to get useful, but having spent a few hours with it now, I think I could get used to it and even prefer it over Gnome.

  3. During the last 2 years with #NixOS, I've mentioned multiple times that my system performance is very poor on my backup notebook: Lenovo #X260 with a 2y old crucial 2TB SATA SSD BX500 2.5"

After setting it up with Debian 13 on the 2TB SSD as well as on the original 250GB SSD, I have to say that the 2TB SSD seems to be the culprit: the system behaves very weird with sluggish waiting/resume/..., system updates take hours instead of minutes, ...

So it wasn't NixOS, but the 2TB SATA SSD. 😔

However, I'm glad to get rid of NixOS step by step anyway for other reasons, being able to run Python scripts again being the most important to me. (Please don't give me any Nix-python advice anymore, I've spent too many days on that issue without a sustainable fix.)

  4. Trying out #openSUSE #Tumbleweed on my spare laptop (Lenovo #x260).

    Notes so far:
    - Network selection isn’t as intuitive as I’d like for a newcomer.
    - Setting a hostname doesn’t feel like a natural part of the installation flow.
    - I’d love a question about disk encryption during installation.

Other than that, the installation program has overall sane defaults and shouldn’t be scary to anyone capable of creating and booting from a USB stick, and reading text off a screen.

  5. #NixOS 25.05 system update (approx. for 4 weeks) took 1h7min on my lenovo #x260 i5 (16GB RAM).

I have no idea why the performance is so poor on that machine in contrast to T490 with same NixOS configuration.

I'll see after I switched back to #Debian if this is related to Nix or the hardware.

  6. I am an idiot (yes, I know that this is not news to some people).

After nearly 2 years of use, I realised today that this laptop has a fingerprint reader installed.

It never showed up in hwinfo so I didn't do anything about it, but for some reason today I installed the software for it (Debian, in the repo) ... & the fingerprint sensor worked.

No-one else is interested of course, but I'm quite delightd by it all. No more tedious passwords on the lock screen etc.

  7. Replaced the keyboard on my #x260 after the left shift key stopped
working. Having performed this procedure on various #Thinkpad models
over the year, this was by far the most tedious; it involves removing
layer after layer from the bottom side of the machine until one
reaches the keyboard on the other end.

And then you need to undo the whole chain of steps to reassamble it!

  8. Please ignore this post - I completely lost my mind. Thaks to @wariat for bringing me back to reality.
  9. I upgraded a #lenovo #X260 notebook with a Crucial BX500 2TB #SSD (SATA).

The #Linux OS is #NixOS: github.com/novoid/nixos-config (host "floyd")

The SSD should be able to do 500MB/s+ and the X260 SATA port has 6Gb/s.

Unfortunately, I only get very, very poor 25.78 MiB/sec (sysbench) performance from that SSD. 😩

Has anybody an idea what I should check/change? 🤔

  10. I replaced the SSD in my old #Lenovo #x260 and tried #FreeBSD again. This time I installed #Xorg, and it turns out the graphics don’t freeze on wake-from-sleep like they did in Wayland. I still have a couple of issues to fix before I’m content, but I’m happy with today’s little project. #RunBSD

  11. @mfru I tried running #FreeBSD on a #Lenovo #X260 a short while but gave up due to lack of time: I got a lot of it running, but also had a lot of paper cuts: #SwayWM was excellent, but when I tried to auto-lock my screen, the #Wayland session froze in a red screen and the only way to get rid of it was to open a console session and kill it. Also the messy #WiFi that can’t natively reach AC speeds and doesn’t roam between APs. I really want it to work for me, but…

  12. I’ve installed #FreeBSD on an old #Lenovo #x260 I had lying around. Turning it into a basic working environment was simple. Making it sleep/wake using the lid took a little bit of research. But I really don’t understand how to apply man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?qu to get the function row working with #ACPI_IBM. Does anybody care to give me a hint to put me on the right track? 🙂

  13. So I installed the Mint themes on my ThinkPad X260. Look how beautiful it is. Red theme fits ThinkPads so well.

  14. So here's a lovely picture of my ThinkPad X260 running Debian Bullseye.
