Solution in #nixos #flake for machine ThinkPad #x230 seems to be:
services.xserver.enable = true;
services.displayManager.gdm.enable = true;
services.desktopManager.gnome.enable = true;
services.desktopManager.gnome.flashback.enableMetacity = true;
# At the GDM login screen, click the gear # icon to choose between:
# - "GNOME" (Wayland)
# - "GNOME Flashback (Metacity)" #X11
and
nixos-rebuild boot + reboot is required (not switch) when jumping across major nixpkgs versions

I am trying to update my #nixos flake and discover that #x11 is not supported by the latest #gnome but I also know that some of my hardware (#HPelitedesk800 , VM machines running xrdp and x11spice) fails to show correct windows under #wayland so this is very un-linuxy and I feel like a sort of macos hardware obsolescence vibe ... Sometimes—when it's on your own terms—leaning in to stereotypes can be fun. For example, I am writing this post with the #emacs client for mastodon on a #thinkpad #x230 laptop running #archlinux :P

Memes aside, these old thinkpads really are good laptops. This one has served me well for many years

services.xserver.displayManager.gdm.autoSuspend = false;
to try to stop the suspending which works totally on my #x230 . I realise you are not using gnome but there might be a similar setting. This setting does not prevent a log-in screen appearing on my desktop machine HP EliteDesk 800 G1 and for that I bought a mouse wiggler in frustration https://amzn.eu/d/08n7oW3 which does the job. I even disable upower on non-laptops.

Finished the #HollowKnight #3dprint I have been telling myself I should make. Ended up scaling it to 200% its original size at 40% infill. It's pretty big with the #X230 (and 10gran) for scale. Kinda worried the head will just make it fall over so may need stronger glue but for right now it seems fine. Hornet is next.

Important: use http://192.168.8.1 to set SIM pin manually after the device has been shown to be recognised and modeswitched using the checks:

I really enjoy my "new" lenovo laptop. its an #x230, approximately 10 years old. it runs lubuntu with a couple additions like discover and can play both youtube and plex videos with no issues. the reason I bought it though is that I wanted a machine that is small. with 14 inches its very handy and takes a couple pounds out of my backpack. I do however want to stress that #lenovo has #drm in their batteries which INFURIATES me.

MAKE VENDORS OPEN THEIR OBSOLETE PRODUCTS NOW!

Dear #lazyweb, I have a really nice mobile workstation that I love but I'd like a #laptop that I can just throw in my bag more easily than my 17" monster. I used to have a #lenovo #x230 that I think is basically the ideal form factor with a really good keyboard.

Does a anyone still make a laptop that is #upgradable and #repairable and has good specs? The small laptops I've seen are all pretty much garbage, performance wise. I want at least 32gb of ram, and ideally 2 PCIe m.2 slots.
