SOURCE: STAT HEALTH TECHTITLE: STAT+: Wearables, and the flood of data they generate, inch closer to entering the clinic
URL: https://www.statnews.com/2026/06/09/wearables-data-oura-whoop-clinical-integration/?utm_campaign=rss
A major selling point for wearable devices is the promise that they’ll help identify hidden health conditions before they lead to major harm. But a nagging issue has been the connection to clinician guidance when a smartwatch or ring raises the alarm.
To help address this issue, wearable makers Oura and Whoop recently announced they’ll make it possible for users to connect virtually with doctors directly from their apps. While the move could represent the first step in the long-awaited adoption of consumer health data by traditional clinical care, experts cautioned that the bar for data in clinical decision-making is higher than for simple wellness purposes. The Food and Drug Administration has only authorized a handful of wearable features for clinical use, and the evidence base for using wearable data to inform medical care is nascent. Widespread use by clinicians will take considerably more work.
“This was an inevitable development,” said Ida Sim, a physician and professor at the University of California, San Francisco, who studies how to make best use of consumer health data. “We’ve got these sensors that have ostensibly valuable data … but we haven’t even begun to tap into the real clinical value.”

They remind you to not talk during the movie, but when I saw “Project Hail Mary” last week, I was so alarmed that Ryan Gosling placed two Eppendorf tubes next to each other that I said, aghast, “He didn’t balance the centrifuge — that would have wrecked it…” while my non-scientist friends cracked up.
That one scientific flub aside, it’s still one of the best book-to-film adaptations I’ve seen, maybe ever.

SOURCE: STAT HEALTH TECHTITLE: STAT+: AI drug developer Insilico Medicine and Lilly ink commercialization deal worth up to $2.75 billion
Alex Zhavoronkov, CEO of Insilico Medicine, can’t stop complimenting Eli Lilly. “Lilly is better in AI than Insilico, and no other company is better in AI than us … except for these guys,” he said.
He insisted he wasn’t saying nice things about Lilly just because the pharma giant has signed a new deal with Insilico that’s worth $115 million up front and approximately $2.75 billion in biobucks, which are contingent on achieving regulatory and commercial milestones. After calling Lilly’s tirzepatide, which he is on, “the best drug ever invented by humans,” he said he’s been consistently singing Lilly’s praises for a year. “Mounjaro makes me so happy every day. I want to develop the next one.”
It looks like Zhavoronkov might have the opportunity to do just that — his AI drug development company’s new deal with Lilly, announced on Sunday, includes rights for the Mounjaro and Zepbound manufacturer to develop, manufacture, and commercialize some of Insilico’s preclinical AI-discovered candidates for oral therapeutics. Though he declined to say which assets Lilly licensed, he said that the company is the “absolutely best partner” for the candidates and that “nobody is better than them” in these disease areas. Insilico’s pipeline webpage recently was updated to note that a candidate targeting GLP-1 has been out-licensed to an undisclosed partner.

I guess I should really start watching “The Pitt.” It’s made its way into my favorite music newsletter, and my friend also tells me that there was Jeni’s ice cream product placement on the show last week. Who’s got an HBO Max login I can borrow?
Also, speaking of ice cream … does anyone have Louisville, Ky., ice cream recommendations? You know where to find me: [email protected], or at the ice cream stand.
Bold ideas about AI and science
Seemay Chou has my dream job: Giving away $3.5 billion of her and her partner’s money before she dies, and thus getting to decide which scientific projects to fund. (If anyone has even $1 billion and wants to make my dream come true, you know my email!!)
You can read more about Chou’s new nonprofit venture, Radial, in my colleague Allison DeAngelis’ exclusive new story, including great details on the Diffuse project, which is seeking to create the next structural biology database, like the one that birthed AlphaFold.

SOURCE: STAT HEALTH TECHTITLE: STAT+: Emoji infiltrate the medical record 🤦

Good morning health tech readers!
I may just be an aging millennial, but I sometimes worry my emoji use is…. wrong. That I’m maybe humiliating myself in Slack and inscrutable in the group chat. It’s a minor (devastating) issue in my personal life, but what happens when characters with no universally defined meaning enter our medical records? Read on to our lead story to find out.

What do emojis in medical records mean?
A wonderful new study of 218 million clinical notes at Michigan Medicine explores the use of emoji in medical records. Emoji use is still rare — they were in fewer than two notes in every 100,000 notes — but those numbers may be ticking up. A total of 372 distinct emoji were identified. As Katie Palmer notes, the use of the cartoony characters in medical records could impact their interpretability with legal and patient care implications.

At a health care AI summit in Washington D.C. yesterday, heavy hitters weighed in on the prospects for interoperability — the effort to make health data currently scattered about the health care system more readily accessible to patients, their providers, and maybe even researchers. A few comments of note:
•This was news to me: Thomas Keane who is the top health IT regulator at HHS said that before Christmas his office hopes to introduce a rule that would eliminate 34 certification criteria for electronic medical records and modify seven. These certification criteria have been much maligned for various reasons including that they create a huge burden on small companies that might want to compete with dominant vendors like Epic Systems.
•
•“We would like the EHR companies to have to do less conformance testing and concern themselves less with this aspect of our regulatory regime,” said Keane. “What we will pivot towards in the spring is regulating the application programming interfaces by which the EHRs talk to each other. And we can say that you have to adopt these features, you have to support this functionality, and if that functionality exists, then these EHRs and other technological applications in the ecosystem should all be able to talk to each other.”
•
•Investor Vijay Pande has resurfaced following his exit from Andreessen Horowitz‘s Bio & Health team earlier this year. He now has a new healthcare AI fund called VZ.VC that he’s not really ready to talk about yet, even though it’s on his LinkedIn profile.
•
•Pande offered an intentionally provocative take on the prospects for interoperability: “I think it’s never going to happen. I think there’s not enough market forces to drive that… I think there’s reasons why we haven’t seen it — It’s not the technology.”

Debate on state AI laws heats up
The health AI summit — where I spent most of yesterday a stone’s throw from the White House — was headlined by deputy health secretary Jim O’Neill. I wrapped up a number of his comments in a story, but most provocative was what he didn’t say: When event host Joe Grogan asked about a controversial proposal to prevent states from enforcing their AI laws, O’Neill demurred, saying only that in general he supported fighting state regulation on AI.
