  1. Drama in the urban garden!

Just looking in our little pond to see what’s happening when I spot something that looked like a #damselfly dead on the surface.

Touched it and it moved so I lifted it out on my finger.

That’s when I noticed it had a very emaciated abdomen. With a dead spider hanging off it!

    Edit (I’m stupid).

Mrs Runt pointed out that the damselfly had probably just emerged from the pond and that the exuvia was still hanging on. Doh!

Decided to place the damsel in distress in our young birch tree so I could have a better look.

Yes, definitely had clearly been predated by the spider, but (and I’m surmising here) had flown into the pond maybe to drown its attacker?

Is that a known observed strategy? Any #entomologists or damselfly specialists who can add to this thought? Or am I simply anthropomorphising the situation?

Or had it just flown off in panic and crashed into the pond?

    It’s a jungle out there!

  6. In the garden yesterday. Here be sparrowhawks!

Sadly, a greenfinch had its last meal at our feeder. I found the top and bottom parts of their beak in amongst the feathers. Bit grim, it when you invite wildlife into the garden, there’s no guarantees what will come. And sparrowhawks are definitely wildlife.

  7. Just got back from the bakery with an additional item.

Saw this frog (Rana temporaria) on my way into town against a house in a small crevice trying to hide off the pavement next to a busy road.

Decided that I’d rescue it from certain death on my way back so asked for a spare paper bag with my loaf.

Collected it up and deposited in our garden by the pond where it is currently resting.

  8. Just found this bee in my garden on the paving, looking very forlorn. Was walking a little bit, but a long way from any food source or shelter.

Moved it to a largish clump of red dead nettle (Lamium purpureum) which is in flower.

I think the bee is a hairy-footed flower bee (Anthophora plumipes) which the iRecord app seemed to agree - though need it to be positively identified by an expert.

Quite the floofy cutie! Hope it appreciated the move and survives.

  10. CW: Large spider 📷

Say hi to my new garage friend 🕷️

Looks like it is one of the steotoda family, possibly S. nobilis, but can’t confirm as I’m not an expert and the species isn’t officially recorded where I live. They are spreading across the country tho, so I live in hope.

  11. New moth for me today. Assuming I have identified it correctly, it’s a “Setaceous Hebrew Character” which sounds like a what3words location, tbh.

Apparently common throughout the UK, so nothing unusual, but always nice to come across something you’ve not seen or heard of before.

  12. Spotted yesterday: woodlouse spider (dysdera sp.) also known as baked bean spider, which I rather like.

I submitted to iRecord as d. crocata but this got an “awaiting review” response as the similarity to d. erythrina makes it difficult to identify except by expert under magnification. Also, neither recorded in my area (but close by).

They have formidable “fangs” which can be painful if they bite you, but not a big problem. It was on my glove 😬

  13. Our little pond is doing exactly what we wanted it to do, be a home for nature.

Only went in the ground last October so the fact that a pair of large red damselflies (pyrrhosoma nymphula) decided to call it home for their young is massively pleasing.

  14. Any spider experts able to help me out with this please? Found in the frame of my back door. I live in Wymondham, Norfolk, UK.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

  15. This is the most magnificent horse chestnut tree that I have seen in a long time. Absolute beauty.

Sitting in the middle of a wet woodland, it completely dominates its location. Wonderful. And massive!

If you zoom in you can see people under the canopy for some scale.

  16. Saw this funky fungus yesterday. I believe it is “scarlet elf cup” (Sarcoscypha coccinea), though more than happy to be corrected.

  17. Really poor image of a peregrine falcon on Wymondham Abbey earlier today. Squint and you may see it 😆

  19. Lovely sunny day yesterday here in Wymondham, Norfolk. Down by the heritage railway, saw a great mass of ivy in flower which was much appreciated by the local insects.

  21. Missed most of the Mid Norfolk Railway summer steam gala, but caught this today at Wymondham Abbey. Which was nice 🚂

  22. I've just seen that the #EggShed vending machine at #Wymondham #Norfolk is closing.

They tried to carry on after #BirdFlu but I suspect it was no longer financially viable.

I am properly gutted for #CavickFarm, but also for the town as they have been an institution for years.

  23. Coming back from an afternoon spent playing board games with my family in #Wymondham we spotted this new message sprayed on a wall barely 150 metres from #Norfolk Police Constabulary HQ.

Someone riffing on a certain version of ‘God Save the Queen’?
