Just pushed my new project repository to gh. https://github.com/ericpareja/wwiv5autosend/
This is my first attempt at reimplementing Cris McRae's AutoSend for WWIV. So far, I've gotten two use cases working: posting subscription lists for each sub hosted here, and posting a list of subs hosted here in a message.

Another sample screen from the new WWIV5 AutoSend. Here is a subscription list for one of the Subs hosted on my BBS.

Someone asked me why I still bother writing tools for BBS software that hardly anyone uses anymore. I just smiled and told them that I still use it, so the tool is mainly for me. But the truth is that there are more than a few others who still use old software like this because they like continuing to use old software. There are countless others who use old computers because they find old computers fun.

I've essentially finished the /subslist option for my WWIV AutoSend rewrite. I'm currently tackling the Yellow Pages posting of subs hosted here. Not gonna lie, the original WWIV AutoSend by Cris McRae was a comprehensive tool with so many details covering different aspects of automated Sub management, I am gonna try my best to make my ground-up re-implementation as close to it as I can make it.

I wrote a basic subscription list generation utility for WWIVnet BBSes in C++, with AutoSend as inspiration. Here's a sample screenshot.
There are a lot of interesting tools you can make for your BBS if you look hard enough. They can be old tools that no longer work with the new BBS, or new tools.

Making ListPlus switchable in WWIV part 3
In a previous post, I modified the Main Defaults screen to display the ListPlus Enabled switch status. This status simply reads the variable lp_options and shows whether the cfl_enable bit is on or off, which we had defined in an earlier post. I'll write about what I did to give the WWIV BBS user the ability to toggle that bit. Since I want ListPlus to be available to users who have ANSI enabled, it makes sense to make the toggle as well as the switch visible to users who have okansi() = [β¦]https://aliens.ph/blog/2026/01/05/making-listplus-switchable-in-wwiv-part-3/

When you figure out you need a line in *WWIV.INI* that reads
"SPAWNOPT[LOGON]=STDIO,NOPAUSE"
for your logon script to display output... -
#Mastodon makes me think a bit of #FrancoMedia at the time.. then I downloaded #WWiV.. Anyone has a D'Bridge, lost, somewhere on a 3,5" floppy?? :P

thinking of whether to rewrite WWIV's bbs/multmail.cpp from scratch or just fix the current code. #retrocomputing #wwiv #BBS #wwivdev

i wrote a non-essential tool for an obscure system used by not more than a dozen people. i wrote it in two different programming languages. for fun. :)
-
Funny that I've been trying to write a BBS utility using a dropfile (door.sys or chain.txt) but don't really need that because I can just use #WWIV core functions to get that info.
-
i started porting my #wwiv lastcallers code from python to c++. first stab is here https://github.com/ericpareja/wwiv5lastcaller
-
got my email export from #wwiv python script working. it takes wwiv packets from the internet/ subdirectory and translates them to SMTP mail and gets sent out via my mail server running postfix. users on my bbs can eventually send email from wwiv.
yes, it's not really needed anymore, but it's fun to make these old things work better.
-
trying to read the #WWIV message base text at a low-level is driving me batty, so i will just use the API. at least, i have some code i can pattern what i'm working on after. it'll be a c/c++ implementation of code i wrote in python2/python3. this should be fun.
i got up to the point where i can read postrecs, with sender, title and stored_as info. reading messages from WWIV Type-2 storage was a bit convoluted. i understood the theory, but couldn't implement.
-
After a bit of massaging, I got an old #WWIV door to compile from source once more. Needed a bit of wrangling to use the newer APIs.

About 10 years ago, I started working on the open source #WWIV #BBS project, mainly with getting bits and parts of it working under Linux. Back then, only the main BBS worked in Linux. Getting it to do any BBS network stuff involved using shell scripts, dosemu, and other voodoo.
WWIV5 has come a long way since then, with all components needed for BBS nets (WWIVnet and FTN) working on Windows, Linux, etc.
The WWIV BBS main site is https://wwivbbs.org and our code at https://github.com/wwivbbs/wwiv.

did a bit of messing around with my exp.py script to process outbound #wwiv to internet email packets and made some progress. it can munch wwiv packets and produce smtp mail. basic functions work. will clean up for configurability later. next bit to do is to create a python script to convert incoming email to wwiv mail packets. this is fun. :)

CW: World War and politics
For those who don't know these days, and scares people with "World War 3", the WWIII already happened - it was the World Cold War. The World War 4 underway, the World Hybrid War - WWIV. It started at 1999 with Putin ascension to power using explosion of apartment buildings, and later Kremlin continued it by making 9/11
