Forscher warnen vor extremen Waldbränden

Die #Erderwärmung steuert laut der Forschungsgruppe World Weather Attribution (#WWA) heuer auf einen Höhepunkt zu. Von Jänner bis April seien mit über 150 Millionen Hektar über ein Fünftel mehr Land verbrannt als beim bisherigen Negativrekord. Dabei stehe die Brandsaison in vielen Teilen der Erde erst bevor. Der rasante Start in Kombination mit dem prognostizierten #ElNino deute auf ein besonders verheerendes Jahr.

In #Afrika sind laut WWA in diesem Jahr bereits 85 Millionen Hektar verbrannt, 23 Prozent mehr als beim bisherigen Höchststand. Ursache seien rasche Wechsel von extrem feuchten zu extrem trockenen Bedingungen, erklärt Theodore Keeping, Experte für #Waldbrände am Imperial College London und Mitglied der WWA. Starke Regenfälle hätten in der vorangegangenen Wachstumsperiode für mehr Gras gesorgt, das nun als Brennmaterial für die durch #Dürre und #Hitze ausgelösten #Savannenbrände diene. In #Asien fielen den Flammen bisher 44 Millionen Hektar zum Opfer, fast 40 % mehr als im bisherigen Rekordjahr 2014. Zu den am stärksten betroffenen Ländern zählen #Indien, #Myanmar, #Thailand, #Laos und #China.

„El Nino“ ist ein Klimaphänomen, bei dem sich der östliche #Pazifik ungewöhnlich erwärmt, was weltweit zu extremen Wetterlagen führt. Keeping warnt, dass „El Nino“ die Wahrscheinlichkeit von extremer Hitze und Dürre in #Australien, #Kanada, den #USA und dem #Amazonas-#Regenwald erhöhe. Sollte sich ein starker „El Nino“ entwickeln, könnte die Gefahr extremer Brände den höchsten Stand der jüngeren Geschichte erreichen. Das Wetterphänomen wird ab Mai erwartet. Die WWA-Mitbegründerin und Klimaforscherin Friederike Otto erklärt, bei einem starken „El Nino“ im weiteren Jahresverlauf bestehe die ernste Gefahr, dass dessen Auswirkungen zusammen mit dem #Klimawandel zu beispiellosen #Unwetter'n und #Hitzewellen führen würden.

@DG1JAN It was still a lot of fun despite #WWA going on. But yeah, we were thrice driven of our QRGS by WWA people tuning nearby and then splattering us away. I could also listened in on a lively argument between a German ham and a WWA guy about the same issue.

@statiopontis @DF4WO Contests befördern sowas leider fast immer. Ich befürchte, dass es bei #WWA die nächsten beiden Wochen eher noch schlimmer werden wird, weil es bei vielen Personen um den Rekord und/oder Preis geht.

Die "Gamification" die da dank Plattformen wie HamAward zu sehen ist, mit Echtzeit-Listen und -Statistiken, übernimmt leider zusätzlich sehr viel von den Mechanismen, die sich bereits bei Social Media und im Online-Gaming als problematisch herausgestellt haben.

@statiopontis @DF4WO Der Kindergarten beginnt aus meiner Sicht bereits beim Contest der sich selbst einfach als "kein Contest" bezeichnet um übliche Contest-Regeln zu umgehen. Sowas zieht wohl einfach bestimmte Leute an.

Gab die letzten Tage auch genug Auseinandersetzungen mit #WWA-Leuten die andere und mich von ihren QRGs vertrieben.

Dieser Rush wenn die Rate über 300 Q/h geht.., einfach geil. Und dabei immer noch nett sein *klopfschulter*.

Heute glaube ich das erste mal auch über 200 Q/h über die letzten 100 QSOs gesehen.

Was heute aber auch wirklich super geklappt hat ist Dipol im linken und Beverage im rechten Ohr, da konnte ich recht oft einen kompletten Suffix hören und dann durch Stimme und CheckPartial+1 direkt den ganzen Call bestätigen. Das bringt einen schwer nach vorne,

@Jeremy That is a great point. I had some trouble distinguishing #WWA from #POTA / #SOTA / #IOTA etc. due to its rules. But "You cannot win POTA" is a good argument!

#WWA declaring itself "not a contest" to circumvent all the usual contest rules (non-contest frequencies, non-contest bands, hour limits for activators etc.) for a full month is gonna lead to issues.

"#ExtremeWeather events kill thousands of people and cost billions of dollars in damage annually.

"#WWA scientists identified 157 extreme weather events as most severe this year, meaning they met criteria such as causing more than 100 deaths, affecting more than half an area’s population or leading to a state of emergency being declared. Of those they closely analyzed 22.

"That included dangerous #HeatWaves, which the WWA said were the world’s deadliest extreme weather events this year. The researchers said some of the heat waves they studied were 10 times more likely than they would have been a decade ago because of #ClimateChange.

" 'The heat waves we have observed this year are quite common events in our climate today, but they would have been almost impossible to occur without human-induced climate change,' Otto said. 'It makes a huge difference.'
Prolonged drought contributed to #wildfires that scorched #Greece and #Turkey. Torrential rains and #flooding in #Mexico killed dozens of people and left many more missing. #SuperTyphoon #FungWong slammed the #Philippines, forcing more than a million people to evacuate. #Monsoon rains battered #India with floods and landslides.

"The WWA said the increasingly frequent and severe extremes threatened the ability of millions of people across the globe to respond and adapt to those events with enough warning, time and resources, what the scientists call 'limits of adaptation.' The report pointed to #HurricaneMelissa as an example: The storm intensified so quickly that it made forecasting and planning more difficult, and pummeled #Jamaica, #Cuba and #Haiti so severely that it left the small island nations unable to respond to and handle its extreme losses and damage. "
