Just as I threatened to do yesterday, I've put together a bit of a scenario so that you can play out one of the greatest pieces of art known to man for the 4th of July. George Washington busting a cap while riding a dinosaur. And I did it in Wushu, because why wouldn't I?

  8. @TheLastOfHisName I think I would find Cypher to be far too much mechanical overhead for an 80s action thriller. Too much simulationism for something which is almost entirely narrative.

For multiple reasons, I would end up going with #Wushu (danielbayn.com/wushu/). In part because that's exactly the sort of thing that it is designed to do. And with character sheets that can literally fit on a 3x5 card with room comfortably left over, it means you're not going to be spending a lot of time mucking around with stuff that's just never going to be important at the table.

Instead, you describe how the character functions and what they care about, and then you get to it. Playing anything as a straight scene is quite easy, but something that manages “over the top” well is a much rarer event.

  9. I never thought I'd be writing an article about how to use the TTRPG Wushu to play out rom-com or hallmark drama scenes rather than high octane action, but here we are.

  10. @AndreasDavour It is pretty generic in feel. You just have to have a certain approach to imagining what counts as an action instead of over-the-top, killer action movie actions. What if you make pleasant, off-handed, biting social commentary actions? Suddenly you're in a comedy of manners trying to navigate the complexity of a Victorian tea party.

Shift your focus to actions like subtle expressions of emotion and tentative give and take, and you can be having a very delicate discussion between father and son regarding their personal differences, perhaps to bury the hatchet or to make their disillusionment with one another permanent.

The tools only specify that the players engage in a series of narratively connected gambits. They don't specify what those gambits are. You can use any kind of action you want to gather dice. That's where the genericism of the architecture kicks in.

It's particularly easy to imagine that you can do any physical over-the-top action you want, and it counts to build the pool. But it's only a small step from there to realize it doesn't have to be. That's where things get interesting.

  11. @AndreasDavour @mrgroknroll Though it is pretty generic, I have used it for everything from D&D-esque dungeon crawling to high space fleet operations without having too much trouble out of it.

Sometimes you might end up making characters for things you wouldn't necessarily think of as characters. But given that character generation is so straightforward and reasonable, it's easy to use the mechanism for anything you feel needs more detail.

It's not a system for people who are obsessed with character progression as a power scale. That part is true.

  12. @mrgroknroll My vote?

    Wushu (danielbayn.com/wushu/).

Ridiculously fast, incredibly lean, and it inherently allows for as much over-the-top action (or as little) as you are inclined to have at your table, though it does lean toward the former.

If I were going to bust out a lightweight spelljammer game and I wanted a traditional GM/player dichotomy (of sorts), Wushu would be the game that immediately jumped to hand. It doesn't hurt that it's completely free along with all of its supplemental text.

Character sheets can fit on a 3x5 card with room to spare, so it really is good to go. Plus, it has a little more structure than Risus, which I find to be a bit more satisfying.

  14. Everyone loves a good sword dance! Btw the actor is trained in Peking Opera so knows all the martial arts moves. It's always a treat to see Zheng Yecheng fight in his dramas because he actual knows what he is doing.
