  1. #WritersCoffeeClub May 26 In your work, how much of an active character is your setting?

In an "MC vs world" story, the world *has* to be an active antagonist. It needs to get some hits in early, and continue to harass the protagonist, and frustrate their plans.

I think my world is a reasonably impressive antagonist, all things considered.

  16. #TimeTravelAuthors 17: Crowds

The MC is not dressed properly for the alternate timeline he's exploring:

"The crowd mostly took less notice of me. No, that’s not quite right–there were a lot more people giving me dubious looks. Everyone took less… 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑟𝑛 about me, though. In the throng of pedestrians, I was ‘somebody else’s problem.’"

  21. #TimeTravelAuthors 15: How complicated is your time travel?

It takes a nuclear plant and billions in special technology to generate enough power to move individual photons around. (The designer eventually figures out how to move roughly a grain of sand... so long as you're cool with a nuclear meltdown and maybe an explosion or two.)

Jim doesn't understand how it actually works... at all. Which becomes a major problem once the machine gets hijacked.

  26. @cavyherd Oh, absolutely. That's perfectly standard. Everyone has something they don't get without a lot of effort and revision, but knowing where it should go is very helpful, and putting down what you know, which is often wildly different from just knowing it, can cast shadows that the shape of what you're missing.

  30. @cavyherd Oh, interesting, that beat doesn't come with characters per se? I usually, not always, start with characters, and they have lives and relationships and contexts attached, though sometimes parts of that are hard to get at.

  35. @cavyherd It's definitely more fun to ask a friend. There's also #writingsf and #writingsff, but those don't get a lot of use. Should I have a writing thought other than ARGH, I could try using them.
