  5. I look at most writing retreat events and go "bleh".

Why? Because they are all about everything but writing.

My idea of an ideal writing retreat event is 20+ writers check into the same hotel/resort.

    And that's it.

We spend our time writing, or perhaps the occasional socialising in the restaurant. Or if it is a resort, vaguely wandering the grounds and thinking about my story.

Nobody pushing "How to get an agent" or "What to look for in an editor" or "What are the latest trends in publishing" or any of that.

Quiet times with good (or at least hotel quality) food, and the possibility of sometimes bouncing an idea off someone. At my convenience.

  6. Back in 2018 I decided I’d had it with winter weather. I headed south, all the way to Panama (where I had lived previously for a short time), and stayed during the coldest months at an AirBnB owned by a friend. I’ve been back every year, except during COVID lockdown, and it's become my #WritingRetreat.

Now, sadly, that epoch is ending. . .

  7. File under Famous Last Words: "It'll be over by 10:30 or 11." Sure, if by 11 you mean 2 in the morning. I think Panamanians learned a different kind of math than I did. It wreaked havoc with my #WritingRetreat, but still, it was a fun party.

  8. Arrived in #Tschiertschen, my home, yesterday.

    Reading in the sun, outside.

#WritingRetreat is off to a good start after some exciting adventures in France these last ten days. More on that later...

I'm still processing and recovering from my travels, which is where I feel the limitations of my #MECFS most acutely.

  15. Arrived in a small Muskoka town,at noon, to begin my solo writing retreat. Can’t enter my suite until five so I am wandering the streets which are filled (both roads and sidewalks) with an inordinate number of tourists. It is stressful. And now it is raining. Thankfully, the library is downtown and open. Yay for libraries! Brought my journal in, found a comfy chair, and now I will attempt to unwind. #writing #WritingRetreat #solo

  17. I already enjoyed this at my former university... This week we (IWP-HSG) had a very productive #writingretreat at beautiful Schloss Wartegg. Leaving everyday life behind for working on my #research in a structured way helped me a lot to make progress on an article and conference contribution for my #habilitation. #deepwork #focus

  19. I was accepted last month for another (my second) week-long residency at the Rockvale Writers' Colony. It’s been a productive week for me (over 13,000 words so far and I still have tonight and tomorrow). See my original review of this place here: joannemerriam.com/2023/02/09/r

  22. I was one of the fellows for the 2023 Roots Wounds Words online writers’ retreat. I had an excellent time working with BIPOC writers and received plenty of useful feedback on my work. The retreat is happening again this coming January. If you’re a BIPOC writer, I recommend it. 24. Dear #MastodonAcademic, have any you budgeted for *writing time* when applying for research funding? I've never seen a grant bid that does so, which suggests that writing is not recognised as the #MethodOfEnquiry it is and is not accounted for in grant time. For example, budgeting for a #WritingRetreat or a project assistant to ensure grant holders have time to at least draft for the dissemination of their findings would seem reasonable to me but ....?#ResearchWriting #AcWri #HigherEducation

  25. Well, I’m back from the Writers Retreat. It’s was sometimes frustrating and weird, sometimes a laugh out loud riot, and even, on occasion, productive. I recommend trying one as long as you keep your goals open. The one thing that was difficult was maintaining covid mitigation strategies as I was the only one doing so. Hopefully, I won’t be paying for this trip later. Fingers crossed. #WritingCommunity #WritingRetreat #AmWritng

  26. "story is how readers dream" - James Scott Bell, Plot & Structure.

I'm heading out to a three day writing retreat tomorrow and I'm excited and nervous about it. Reading craft books and watching YouTube videos to get myself into the right headspace. According to the website, wifi is spotty so if you don't hear from me over the weekend, I'm either have fun or going mad. Or both.
