  1. A quotation from Cicero

For indeed it is possible that a man may think well, and yet not be able to express his thoughts elegantly; but for any one to publish thoughts which he can neither arrange skillfully nor illustrate so as to entertain his reader, is an unpardonable abuse of letters and retirement: they, therefore, read their books to one another, and no one ever takes them up but those who wish to have the same license for careless writing allowed to themselves.

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) Roman orator, statesman, philosopher
    Tusculan Disputations [Tusculanae Disputationes], Book 1, ch. 3 (1.3) / sec. 6 (1.6) (45 BC) [tr. Yonge (1853)]

  5. Hey, fellow #writers.

May I recommend to you that you join a #writinggroup. Having other writers around you once a week to write to a prompt and share (if you want), is really good for the soul.

Check your local public library, they may well host in-person or virtual writing groups. Just another nice thing that many libraries do

  9. My writing group gave me great feedback, and I'm glad we have built trust so that we can give and receive in-depth praise and criticism. It means that I know they really like my work, and are trying to improve it.

But... I really thought I wouldn't have to edit this story much more. And now maybe I will. Sigh...

  13. In my other place with writing conversations, we've been talking about strategies for GIVING useful feedback, how to be a good reader of someone else's in-progress work, how to frame comments in neutral ways, how to help another writer generate ideas for revision that they are truly excited about. Basically, how to be a good workshop citizen.

How do you approach GIVING feedback? Any tips or strategies or frustrations?

  21. Picture writing prompt:

Is this a rural idyll, or are there dark secrets that hide beneath the picturesque?

It comes with the words jade and dagger and the names Fellin and odine.

    Be inspired, write and share.

  22. @me_brady @orionkidder

Our #WritingGroup had some effective rules:

    1) the people critiquing always had to start with at least one positive thing.
    2) the person whose work was being critiqued could not comment while the critiquing was happening but could take notes.
    3) after all the critiquing was done, the writer could then speak and answer any questions that came up.

We all learned hard-core how not to take things personally. And we all had our turn in the hot seat!

  24. My #WritingGroup met again this week for the first time after our 3 week summer break and shared our chapter summaries/outlines. It was delightful to see how people's novels have progressed. Me, I totally restructured my "three stories in a trench coat" into something that feels...cohesive? Maybe?

  27. What is this astronaut doing in this living room? It's not only fun to figure that out for yourself, what if you could find out what a room of people thinks? That's what we do during the free writing group Snow - we choose a prompt, write, then people who want to share do. (People who don't? Also totally fine. Sharing is 100% voluntary. No one will call on you.) Give Snow a try: crowcollectiveworkshops.com/20

  29. My mentorship with Gurjinder Basran at the Vancouver Manuscript Intensive is coming to an end, and the current writing group I’m in takes three months to get around to workshopping my stuff. I’m looking for a writing group which meets every two weeks or so. Any speculative fiction writers out there want to make a little writing clique? I give useful feedback. #WritingCommunity #SpeculativeFiction #WritingGroup #Readers #Writers #SFF @indigenousauthors

  31. I started this free online writing group because I wanted people to have a place to come where they could write to prompts and then share (or not share, also totally cool) their writing.

    If you…

    * Enjoy spending time with other writers in a supportive, friendly group.
    * Like joy and cooperation and giggling a lot.
    * Are respectful and kind…

    This group is for you!

  33. Free: Bevy of Pigeons is for people who like to write with others silently. We’ll meet for 30 minutes. Bring your own writing, or use the prompt Sage Tyrtle gives you. We’ll write silently together. Want to go write at a coffeeshop but with your own music and your own cats and your way less expensive coffee? This group is for you!

  36. On the lookout for an online #writinggroup after an unexpected experience last week writing to prompts inspired by materials. My writing turned out to be experimental and autobiographical, not to mention cathartic. Does anyone have any recommendations to finding the right writing group?

  37. Found an evening & local #writinggroup! Living in a village, usually, everything like that is in the bigger places, so thirty miles away, or U3A'esque, i. e. on at 11am on a wednesday. Cycled to this one :-) Small group, friendly folk, no 'personalities' so far...
