Have just added NSW writers festival (Writers at the Woolshed in Wagga Wagga) to the mega listing of 2024 Australian writers festivals so you can start your dreaming/planning now.

Love how each is curated so differently, from crime writers to literary, non-fiction to romance and everything in between.

Australian freelance writers and authors - as I write in Look-It's Your Book! - you're missing out if you're not signed up for ELR, PLR and CAL.

In that vein, here's a great piece by @ViviennePearson with the nuts and bolts of how to sign up for Copyright payments (CAL) so you are compensated for your work being copied by schools/uni's, government and businesses.

'Freelance Christmas' is always great to look forward to so have a read!

Authors: want to know how to give your book the best chance of being chosen by Australian libraries? One of my favourite places is my local library. Not just because of all the wonderful librarians and the books I get to borrow, but I also get the buzz of seeing my own books on the recently returned shelf, or hear that my farm memoir is being enjoyed or dissected by another bookclub. This week too, Australian authors received our Lending Rights notification (the annual payment AU authors receive if there are at least 50 copies of your book available in AU libraries). There are many reasons why it's important for authors (trad and indie!) to work on building library demand for our books, and for all the writers who have asked me how to go about it, I've created a handy online course with all the info, tips, links, registration pages, list of distributors, marketing ideas and downloads you need to give you and your book the best chance at Australian library success. You can access the course at www.boldauthors.com - hope it helps you achieve your goals!

Will Writers Australia succeed where other peak bodies have not? Ideas similar to the proposed new Australian literary entity have been tried in the past, often with what could best be called mixed results:

Writers Australia will be set up under the National Cultural Policy to "provide direct support to the literature sector from 2025." A focus on writers' remuneration, local literary awards, and promoting the work poets, should be among WA's goals.

"The arts cannot be simply left to those who can afford to do it. Arts jobs are real jobs." Prime Minister Albanese says at the launch of a new cultural arts policy for Australia and the launch of 'Creative Australia'.

Great to hear a government acknowledging the difficulty of earning a living for writers, musicians and artists...and also the lack of diverse voices because of this.
