  1. Space and Time with Sam Neill

I was very sad this morning to read the news that Sam Neill has passed away at the age of 78. He was a very fine and exceptionally versatile actor. Among many other roles I remember him well as the sadistic and corrupt Chief Inspector Chester Campbell in Peaky Blinders. I was impressed by his convincing Ulster accent but then found out he was actually born in Omagh, County Tyrone.

About 25 years ago (!) I made a very brief appearance in a BBC documentary series called Space for which Sam Neill (left) was the narrator. Apparently he only agreed to do the job on condition that they would film his segments at his home in New Zealand. I remember talking to the production team about Sam Neill and they all said he was not only very professional in his work but also a very nice man. These things don’t always go together…

After the episode I was in – the last of six – was broadcast, my Mam rang me. She didn’t mention my part at all, but asked “That Sam Neill, is he nice?”. I had to explain that I never met him, as they filmed his segments after all the other location sequences. “Oh well,” she said. “At least he knew your name”.

The following clip shows the item I took part in. Originally we were going to demonstrate wormholes using a snooker table, clever editing and reversed video. The producer, Jeremy Turner,  decided that wouldn’t look spectacular enough so instead we went to St Anton in Austria: I was flown over the Alps in a helicopter and then driven through the Arlberg tunnel in an impressively fast car. Well worth the cost to license fee payers, I’m sure, even if the three-day trip to Austria by me and a crew of six as well as the hire of the helicopter ended up as a mere three minutes of screen time.

The item is daft, I know, and I don’t really believe any of that stuff about wormholes… but it was great fun doing it. I remember after the shoot we had a few drinks to wrap it up then left on a very early flight the next morning to the UK. I got back to Nottingham University just in time for a 10am lecture.

Anyway, the episode I was in was called To Boldly Go. I remember suggesting to the producer that the only way to travel faster than light in the manner required was with a split infinitive drive, but they didn’t use that in the final script.

Notice how, in the helicopter sequence, I give the appearance of being completely terrified. A fine piece of acting by me, I thought. *Cough*

  3. New #blog post up today! I have a very petty complaint about portrayals of wormholes in fiction, and now you can read about my silly complaints: rznicolet.com/2026/07/05/wormh

#sfcd #wormholes #wissenschaft #universum #weltraum #science

  5. Today's #paperOfTheDay is "Why there is Nothing rather than something: A theory of the cosmological constant" from 1988. Like yesterday's paper, it deals with the intersection between quantum field theory and #generalRelativity, but the 30 years between them clearly show. Coleman's 1988 paper is an argument in the style of that time (which structurally is quite similar to much of the older #renormalon literature): Heuristic manipulations of formal objects such as the wave function of the universe, or divergent sums over all spacetime geometries. The outcome of this argument is that if #wormholes exist (caused by quantum effects at a scale that is much smaller than observations, but larger than the Planck scale), they can drive the cosmological constant to zero in an Euclidean path integral formulation of general relativity. As always with Coleman, the language is quite funny and frank about the paper's limitations: He writes "Although I find this theory in many ways very attractive, I must honestly stress its speculative character. It rests on wormhole dynamics and the Euclidean formulation of quantum gravity. This is doubly a house built on sand. [...] the Euclideon formulation of gravity is not a subject with firm foundations and clear rules of procedure; indeed, it is more like a trackless swamp". Observations like these have by now, 30 years later, led to a style of theoretical physics that is much more systematic and mathematical than in the 1980s, but also sometimes less intuitive. #dailyPaperChallenge doi.org/10.1016%2F0550-3213(88

  6. Wormholes are theoretical spacetime tunnels, while paranormal portals represent folkloric gateways, both suggesting shortcuts through reality. Their connection reflects humanity’s pursuit of understanding existence’s limits. #wormholes #portals connectparanormal.net/2025/11/

  7. Scientists Use Novel Materials That Mimic Wormholes and Multiple Realities to “Transcend the Limitations of Physical Dimensions”

Researchers have used nonlocal artificial materials to mimic the effects of wormholes and multiple realities. When light enters one boundary in the artificial material, it experiences an entirely different set of optical effects compared with light entering from another boundary. Surprisingly, each of these optical experiences can occur without any interference between them.

The researchers liken this effect to C.S. Lewis’s classic, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, where different “doors” could lead to entirely separate worlds located in a single place.

  8. @ai6yr Let me know if you find my 3 jars of Flatiron Spices that I “put away”. I’m operating on the odd sock theory that there are wormholes and our stuff falls into it, shows up somewhere else, and we find things here that came from somewhere else because #WormHoles.

  15. The geometry of spacetime might hold exotic features like naked singularities, wormholes, or closed time loops. If present, these structures could enable phenomena such as time travel or shortcuts across vast cosmic distances. But what is the true “shape” of the universe? Understanding these possibilities could change our grasp of causality and space itself. Current theories suggest these features could exist, but confirming them would push the limits of physics.#Spacetime #Wormholes
