Patna Bird Sanctuary in #UttarPradesh and Chhari-Dhand in Gujarat have been added to India’s Ramsar Sites list, taking the country’s total wetlands of international importance to 98 ahead of #WorldWetlandsDay.

"India has added two more ecologically significant #wetlands to its #RamsarSites network, strengthening the country’s global conservation footprint just ahead of World Wetlands Day on February 2. Patna Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district and Chhari-Dhand in Gujarat’s Kutch district have been officially designated as Wetlands of International Importance under the #RamsarConvention.

"The announcement was made by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav on social media platform X, where he underscored the importance of these wetlands as critical habitats for migratory birds, resident species, and rare wildlife."

Honor World Wetlands Day with a Charleston marsh cleanup

#CharlestonSC (WCBD) – "A #marsh cleanup event is planned on World Wetlands Day in Downtown Charleston.

"The #CharlestonWaterkeeper, #KeepCharlestonBeautiful, and #TheMarshProject are hosting a cleanup near Waterfront Park in Downtown Charleston and are seeking volunteers.

"Volunteers will pick up litter from one of the city’s beloved marsh fronts. Volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing that can get dirty.

"Spaces are limited, so interested volunteers are encouraged to sign up here.

"Feb. 2 is World Wetlands Day, a fitting moment for Charleston Waterkeeper to celebrate, as about 40% of Charleston is considered a wetland ecosystem, the group says on a recent Facebook post.

"The group also says marshes are vital. They provide #habitat, stabilize #shorelines, and protect us from #StormSurges. Cleanups help keep these #ecosystems resilient and protect all residents."

Excerpt: "A case study from #India led by Dr Samir Kumar Sinha, Chief Ecologist, Wildlife Trust of India, on the potential influences of #SarusCrane recovery on the wetland ecosystem services has recorded that the '#Sarus #crane holds cultural significance and thus provides cultural services in India. Its foraging behaviour – primarily digging for tubers and roots in muddy wetlands –creates ploughed patches that enhance plant diversity and support the growth of of less dominant plant species. The crane also benefits small-scale farming, as their nesting sites provide foundations for pioneer grasses instead of the typical reed and sedge, which allow the farmers to till, plough, and sow crops earlier,' the WTI said.

"The Ganges River basin hosts diverse wetlands vital for biodiversity, including the culturally significant but vulnerable Sarus crane, which depends on both natural and man-made wetlands. Habitat destruction has forced these cranes to breed in rice paddies, despite lower breeding success.

"The Sarus crane serves as a key indicator of wetland health. Conservation efforts in eastern #UttarPradesh by the #WildlifeTrustOfIndia have protected 700+ nests, leading to an 8 per cent annual population growth from 650 (2013) to 2,600 (2024)."

February 2 was World Wetlands Day, and the Edmonton chapter of the Council of Canadians organized an event at the Ukrainian Hall on 97th Street and 110 Avenue. It featured information tables from a variety of organizations, a performance from The Raging Grannies, and the opportunity for people to speak about the importance of wetlands and conservation.
