Did you know that all tortoises are in fact turtles — they belong to the order Testudines or Chelonia (reptiles having bodies encased in a bony shell) — but not all #turtles are #tortoises.
One way to tell them apart is by where it lives. A #turtle lives mostly in #water, while a #tortoise is a #land animal.
Some people use the terms interchangeably but technically that's not always correct.

communities are protecting sea turtle nests and supporting nesting by extinguishing outdoor lights...and it's working!Here in North Carolina, we tracked 1387 nests in 2024, like the one I camped near on remote Bear Island yesterday.

Today is World Turtle Day. Years ago I made a print called ‘Turtles, all the way down’ for an art show about cosmology, where the expression is used as a metaphor for infinity regress. This echos origin myths that the Earth is supported on the back of the World Turtle. Though ostensibly about astrophysics, I took the opportunity to depict many species of turtles to celebrate their 🧵
