Exploring the iconic Atomium, a true masterpiece that beautifully blurs the lines between sculpture and architecture! 🌟 Constructed for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, this stunning structure represents an iron unit cell magnified 165 billion times! Isn’t it incredible how a single design can embody the spirit of a city and a country? 🏛️❤️

I finally got round to sorting through all my photos from my Japan trip in April. It's fair to say that I got a bit snap-happy while I was out there. I've not added captions (because, honestly, who has time to write over a thousand photo captions?) but, if anything needs an explanation, leave me a comment.

GGIE (Golden Gate International Exposition) had transportation called the Elephant Train, this fellow on a real elephant tried to get you to ride it. (no the Elephant train wasn't pulled by a real elephant, yes, the Elephant trains later went to the SF Zoo where people today still remember them) #sfhistory #sfmemory #elephant #worldsfair https://sfmemory.org/Display/sfm008-00380 -

Sophia Hayden (1868–1953), born in Santiago Chile, was an American architect and the first female graduate in architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In 1891, the Construction Department of the World’s Columbian Exposition announced a competition for the design of the Woman’s Building, one of the exhibition halls to be constructed for the 1893 international exposition in Chicago. Only designs submitted by women were eligible.
At 21, Hayden's design was chosen out of 13 designs entered, all by women under 25 years of age. She received only the $1,000 prize for the design, while many male architects earned $10,000 for similar buildings.
Sadly Hayden's experiences during the construction of her design were difficult ones. She battled with socialite Bertha Palmer who had been chosen to head the Board of Lady Manager's, and eventually she was fired from the project although she did attend the Inaugural Celebration.
After the frustrating experience of the Chicago Fair, Hayben did not work in Architecture again. She married artist William Bennett in 1990.

@TheConversationUS Here's a little more foreshadowing, featuring "Elektro the Robot" at the 1939 #WorldsFair in #NewYork, which was labeled the "World of Tomorrow":

Like with today's "#AI", the key was to plausibly appear intelligent, not to actually be intelligent, and like today, reproducing stereotypes and prejudice (wait for the "joke" on "numbers") are considered a feature, not a bug.

I went to a community #BoardGame night on Friday and got to play #WorldsFair and #AroundTheWorldIn80Days with some good friends. I was having a hard week and it really picked me up.
I have to remember that almost every time that I feel spent and don't think that I want to hang out around the game table with friends, that I am probably wrong and should just try it.
Rarely am I disappointed. I came away in better shape than when I arrived.

Back to some space history neepery, hmm? I've previously spoken of the 1964 World's Fair in New York City as a last gasp of 20th century techno-optimism, and this is a little bit more from it. It's art of the Hall of Science's "movie hall", showing a Martin Marietta station and spaceship. It was printed in the Souvenir Book of the fair.

The Trylon and Perisphere were collectively (and are even now) the symbol of the New York World's Fair in 1939, the last gasp of interwar optimism about the future. Less well-known is that inside the sphere was a diorama of "Democracity" a prospective city in said future.
The latter picture here was printed in Vogue, May 1939, while the entire brochure for the diorama can be read here (10 MB PDF): https://www.1939nyworldsfair.com/ftp/democracity_booklet/3-democracity_booklet_12x18.pdf
