Artist Cedric Morris and his partner Arthur Lett-Haines opened the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Dedham in 1937. Within a year they had 60 students. Lucian Freud was one of his most noted students.

About Freud, Morris would later write:

‘I have always admired his paintings and everything about him .’

I came across these two images, one a photo, the other a painting, and I was struck by the similarity of the two men separated by space and time! The photograph of the young man leaning against a houseboat was taken by UK Photographer Ian McDonald in Middlesbrough in 1973. The painting by current Martha’s Vineyard resident Heather Neill, titled The Bogcutter is a portrait of the artist’s son!

“The sleeping man is my husband the artist Saied Dai and yes, there is a tiny self-portrait in the reflection on the desk lamp – a silent witness. The painting on the wall is also a self-portrait, and the feeling I wanted was that of my watching over him. The whole painting is a kind of love letter …”

QUO VADIS?

A portrait of then 94 year old Vincenza in her kitchen in Italy by artist Massimiliano Piranti.

“Vincenza was my grandmother and a fundamental part of my family history. I wanted to represent her in a moment of her everyday life, sitting in the middle of the kitchen, illuminated from above by a chandelier that, like a spotlight, highlights the features of almost a century of life.”

The oil on aluminum panel painting was the Third Prize winner BP Portrait Award 2019, National Portrait Gallery

“Vincenza lived each day as if it was her last and often told me: ‘you'll see that tomorrow, I’ll be gone.’”. She passed away in 2021.
