I finally got round to sorting through all my photos from my Japan trip in April. It's fair to say that I got a bit snap-happy while I was out there. Went back for another assignment at #Osaka #worldExpo #Japan and saw no line at the mediocre #India (sorry, "Bharat") pavilion but a decent line at the far-superior #Indonesia pavilion.
Word has gotten around, it seems.

Mathematics as a Bridge Between Cultures at Expo 2025 Osaka 🇯🇵
From July 18 to 27, 2025, researchers from the University of Liège (ULiège), the @unifr (UniFr), and the University of Luxembourg (UniLu) will present the project “Traces” at the World Expo in Osaka.
This project is the result of a great collaboration between three universities from multilingual countries with strong commitments to both research and public engagement.

#India pavilion at #Osaka #WorldExpo was a #Hindu-nationalist showcase, adorned with religious symbols, showcasing temples and and scriptures through. Didn't see a single mention of #Islam anywhere nor much of anything from #SouthIndia
Stark contrast to the far superior #Indonesia pavilion next door, which highlighted the country's cultural & natural diversity, not highlighting one religion or ethnic group over others.

🇯🇵 I am on my way to Nippon for the first time! This also is my first “just for me” travel—no work, no friend or family instigation—in a long time. The break is much needed. I will visit Kyoto, Tokyo, and Osaka. So many more places I would like to see that will have to wait for a second trip to the country.

I’ve lived in this city for decades, and only now do I discover (by accident / serendipity) these wonderful modernist pedestrian bridges.
They were part of the 1930 World Expo in Antwerp, built in an old entrenchment-turned-park.

#SouthKorean PM Han Duck-soo plans to embark on a five-nation tour of #Africa and #Europe to garner support for hosting the 2030 #WorldExpo in #Busan and strengthen bilateral ties.
The host country will be decided in a vote by the Bureau International des Expositions in late November.

The Weltexpo took place there in 2005.
Unfortunately, I was not privileged to be there.
It wasn't until many years later that I managed to visit.
In addition to a museum, the site has now been converted into a park.
I'll have my next chance at Expo 2025 in Osaka, if it takes place.

We have a winner! In the final round of voting, Belgrade has beaten Malaga 81 votes to 70 and wins the right to host Expo 2027 in Serbia.
The theme is "Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All".

That leaves Rome, Busan, and Riyadh in the race for Expo 2030. Voting takes place in November.
Tomorrow, meanwhile, BIE members will be voting on the hosting rights for the smaller-scale Expo 2027 (or 28, if Phuket wins). It's a five way shoot-out between Bariloche, Belgrade, Malaga, Phuket, and Minnesota. Looking at flight prices, my wallet would not mind one bit if Malaga wins the bid (plus the city genuinely looks an interesting place to visit)!

So, the BIE have announced that Odessa is out of the running for hosting Expo 2030. Which is fair enough. As much as I love the dream of a post-war Ukraine welcoming the world in 2030, serious logistic planning would need to start from late-2023 onwards, and that just seems impossible (and, probably, distracting).

Exactly one year ago, I had just finished my first day exploring Expo 2020 in Dubai. Yup, I'm going to be thinking about travel a lot this week. I gotta get my next holiday sorted.

Huh, just realised that yesterday would have been the opening day of Expo 2023 in Buenos Aires, if it hadn't been for the pandemic. I feel like I'm missing out and, yet, I'm not sure I would have been able to afford a trip to Argentina. Conversely, I probably wouldn't have been able to go to Expo 2020 if COVID hasn't delayed the opening and given me an extra year to save up.
Either way, my wanderlust is growing to severe levels and I need to book a holiday. 😅
