  5. Blows the wind to-day, and the sun and the rain are flying,
Blows the wind on the moors to-day and now,
Where about the graves of the martyrs the whaups are crying,
    My heart remembers how!

  6. Yesterday, I saw a cousin of yours,
    a whimbrel,
that, when close to, looks like yourself
    seen at a distance…

  7. You see that I will have to rise
And turn round and get back where
My running age will slow for a moment
To let me on. It is a colder
Stretch of water than I remember.

    The curlew’s cry travelling still
    Kills me fairly…

  9. #WorldCurlewDay, a day when the curlew stands for all species caught in the climate and biodiversity crisis. I will take a walk on the moor after lunch and be grateful for their presence.

  10. In #folklore hearing a curlew call is said to mean bad luck if heard at night or bad weather if during the day, but personally I always count myself lucky whenever I hear their calls across the mudflats in winter #WorldCurlewDay

  13. I've been recording bird sounds on my phone as it was #WorldCurlewDay yesterday and there are lots around. Does anyone know why I can't attach the sound files to a toot? It's very wasteful to use video to record sound.

I've filmed a little clip to capture a snipe 'drumming' in the first 3 secs, a sheep, a pheasant and right at the end a redshank. Some of the usual sounds here that many people may not hear every day. There just happens to be a pied wagtail on the wall. Sound up of course.

  15. Morning all. It’s #WorldCurlewDay today. Please spread the love for these terrific endangered birds. Born in a Pennine village next to the moors, the distinctive curlew cry is an evocative sound of my childhood. If you’re out for a walk on the moors keep your dog on a lead. Curlews may be nesting. xx

  16. For the 3rd time in the last 20 years developers have bought a parcel of 21 acres of land above Magheramore Beach in County Wicklow and are trying to develop it.

It's a wintering site for the curlew, consider signing
