My beef with D&D may be showing, but I am quite pleased by how many of the RPG panels at #worldcon2024 explicitly point out that D&D is a pretty bad starting RPG - it's more complex than it needs to be, and there's lots of things that are more approachable and more interesting than for newbies.

(I'm catching up with stuff on Worldcon's Replay functionality)

I've started drawing up a list of key Worldcon programme items I missed so that I can go back and watch the reply of them. I fear I will have to ruthlessly triage this list if I am not to be spending the rest of my life watching recordings of Glasgow Worldcon panels.

Finally looking at the Worldcon Discord with a view to picking up reading suggestions etc. for panels I was interested in and wishing all the panels had their own dedicated Discord space like with the Academic track, as opposed to the room-based splodge there seems to be for everything else.

My feeling is that the performance at Worldcon of Dune The Musical will be eligible for the 2025 Hugo Awards. The musical has been performed previously but that specific performance took place in 2024.

Some thoughts about #worldcon2024 , a thread.

This was my first WorldCon, and actually essentially my first Con (I turned up briefly to Satellite 4 / Eastercon 65, but on the last day when it seemed like mostly everyone was just tearing down...).
In the best traditions of "learn by doing", it's also the first Con I volunteered at (Discord Mod + "Voice of Online" for several panels), which I Recommend not just morally but also because it helps you learn how stuff works faster.

Haven't started writing my #Worldcon2024 trip report yet and already wondering how many thousand words it's going to end up being. I need to get cracking before I forget all the things that my hastily typed notes actually refer to. Between six days in Glasgow and the four days before that in London I'll have more than usual to write about.

I didn't take many pictures at Worldcon. Here's a scene from Dune! The Musical, the bar where the Worldcon pub crawl kicked off, my final collection of ribbons, and a pile of stuff I brought home with me from Glasgow.

Envious of my friends (including some St A CS folks!) who are heading to the #Glasgow #Worldcon this week. Sadly though we have in person attending tickets we can't go. I'm far too seriously ill now to manage it. Plus the infection risk is too high for severely #immunosuppressed me. I definitely know what I want to make next, but I can't proceed until my sample of the Landing Zone Glasgow tartan has arrived from Scotland. I plan to make all kinds of matching jewelry for Polka Dot Cottage. I'm excited to get started, but I can't even shop for polymer clay until I have that fabric in my hand and can match colors reliably. Hope it gets here soon!!
