  1. The lion, with its majestic mane and the loudest growl of all the big cats, is today a vulnerable species with decreasing populations in extremely fragmented habitats.

It once ranged widely throughout Africa and Eurasia; today, it’s restricted to parts of sub-Saharan Africa and one small area in western India.

For #WorldLionDay on Aug. 10, Mongabay looks back at some of our coverage this year of the challenges that Panthera leo faces.

Happy #WorldLionDay! Here at the Zoo, lions Hassan and Zuri inspire action for their wild cousins every day. Their species face growing threats, but we can help protect their future. Stand with us and support conservation efforts so their roars always echo across the savanna. t.co/kpj0osuBS7

  3. It is #WorldLionDay today.

Remembering the time when everyone’s favourite highbrow quiz #OnlyConnect brought a pack of lions into the studio.

  4. Just wanted, to honour today's #WorldLionDay, bring up Elle Clifford's and Paul Bahn's ‪‪Curren World Archaeology article on the Hohlenstein-Stadel #LionMan which, and why not, may be a bear actually. 🦁🐻😉

  10. It’s #WorldLionDay. This is an original lino block print showing a lioness & a lion, sitting in the grass, watching. I was inspired by a photograph my mother took in the Ngorongoro conservation area in Tanzania. It is called, “The Watchers, Ngorongoro”. The photo gives the strong impression the lions are watching the people back.

Lion populations are vulnerable & have decreased 43% in the last two decades. They have been pushed out of their traditional habitat in many countries. 🧵

  12. RT by @EU_ENV: Today is #WorldLionDay. Habitat loss, illegal trade, and land disputes endanger the survival of lions. #ActNow to:

    ✅ Support lion conservation
✅ Spread awareness about illegal trade
✅ Avoid purchasing products that contain lion parts

  14. Crowned King of the Jungle

Revered throughout history and across cultures, this regal creature commands respect and captivates all who have the privilege of witnessing its presence.

Cloaked in a mane of flowing gold, the lion’s appearance exudes an air of royalty and nobility, earning it the title of “king.” With its muscular build, striking amber eyes, and a confident stride that echoes through the plains, the lion stands tall as the epitome of strength and authority.

As the sun sets over the savannah, casting a warm glow over the grasslands, the lion’s majestic roar pierces the stillness, a sound that echoes through the ages and sends a powerful message to all – a proclamation of authority and territorial ownership. Their roar, often heard from miles away, symbolizes both strength and unity, a call that unites the pride and announces their presence to rivals.
