I know this isn't really the best place to ask but (for fear of shaming others, I'll keep this post about myself)...how many computers is too many #computers ? Between my work laptop, and my personal computing devices at home, I feel I am in the realm of "too many", as in double digits. I fear they are just becoming distractions and I'm edging on hoarder territory. I can't be the only one that sees a shiny new doohickey and immediately wants it. (fucking capitalism) I really only have need for 1 personal computing device and maybe a tablet. The older I get the easier it is to not be drawn to new and shiny but the tickle is still there. So I think it's time to do a little hardware detox and simplify my life. Nothing worse than having to keep multiple systems updated to just sit around and collect dust.

New desk layout roughly implemented. Still need the table legs to get the right side off of a cooler and some milk crates, and ill probably rearrange the monitor setup once I can actually put weight over there. Cable straps coming tomorrow hopefully so I can fix that nightmare, and get back to tinkering with my SBC NAS.

More drawers and cabinets as well as wall shelving coming soon also.

I might work on a blog rant about the #unix on Desktop = #Workstation claim, albeit with a little nuance, that said, #workstations sold today aren’t necessarily free of Windows or #Linux, #Apple’s #UnifiedMemory lacks the Error Correction that #ECCRAM does and it might come to #MacPro’s after they dump #IntelXeon completely, and so on.

I need to look into re-learning #thermodynamics.
#Motherboard says the #CPU #core #temps are around 10C higher than what the #heatsinks are (I built my own #sensor set for this machine - because I wanted to.)
Granted, this is one of the old E5-2600v2 series #motherboards in the computer I'm typing on right now.. (different computer, not the server - waiting for #Amazon to deliver my new #frelling CPU coolers), an X9DRH-7TF by SuperMicro, so maybe that's #normal?

In the days of Sun-3 and other early #UNIX #workstations, the #XWindow System had one window manager, the "twm" (Tom's Window Manager). The only "apps" we used, then, were XTerm, XClock, and XEyes. Some used the XCalc, but I just used the \(\texttt{dc}\) RPN calculator in XTerm, which is more convenient, and is scriptable.

I miss those simpler times, when we still held on to our #VT100, just in case.

My current box that I'm typing on right now is a Z240. 3.6G I7. 32G ram.

The thing about the HP Workstations is that you can get two generations back as cheap as a business class machine.

My theory is that they turn over quicker than business class because the architects and engineers that use them benefit from the faster machines and their time is so valuable.

I do video editing using Openshot. I do have a video card installed, also a few generations back.

I've just made a considerable update to a brief, 16 year old blog post of mine about a very obscure piece of hardware (the GFX-1600SW), a 3rd-party clone of a somewhat less obscure piece of hardware (the SGI MultiLink adapter), which allows an SGI 1600SW display to be used with systems lacking the LVDS video interface SGI put in the unit, converting it to DVI.

SO...if you read that one back in 2008, be sure to check it out again, because I'd not want you to be running on an old version of that info...

Geil, habe eben bei #ebay was für 1€ eingestellt (alte Schule halt) und schaue dann immer mal nach alten #Sun #Workstations - Jo, #Sun #Blade 1500 SILVER Workstation Complete refurbished für 24.975,00€ würde ich jetzt nicht als Schnapper bezeichnen. Das wäre vor 25 Jahren auch keiner gewesen. Evtl. hat jemand da was verwechselt oder sind wir nun im #TimeTunnel?

Maybe it’s just me, but I think we should have Legal Definitions & Distinctions about the differences between REAL #Workstations and High End #Prosumer #computers that aren’t determined by Tech Business Leaders.
