In Bezannes, employees of the ambulance driver Clovis and the coach company Capitale Champagne, subsidiaries of the Dewitte group, have been holding a picket since Monday August 31 for the improvement of their salaries, their working conditions (payment of break times and night hours, maintenance of outfits and modification of schedules) and against the installation of cameras in company vehicles.

The next morning, Laurent Dewitte himself got behind the wheel of a coach and drove into the picket line. The vehicle hit at least two employees, one of whom was dragged about ten meters, the two injured having had to be hospitalized. After getting off the bus, the boss even, according to witnesses, directly threatened the strikers: " I think the next one, before blocking my business, will think twice. "The boss and the second driver were taken into police custody for acts of armed violence, then released a few hours later.

If the clearly deliberate and excessively violent behavior of the leader was greatly shocking, this affair is not isolated and is part of a long history of violence against strikers and trade unionists.

  4. This Labor Day, remember: history is not going to save us. We have to fight for it. Organize. Speak up. Elect leaders who will defend democracy, workers, and our freedoms.

  5. Labor Day marks more than the end of summer.

Congress made it a federal holiday on June 28, 1894, signed during the Pullman strike. The Social Security Act came in 1935, in the middle of the Great Depression, and with it the retirement security many Americans plan around. Title VII followed in 1964, the ADEA in 1967, the ADA in 1990, and the FMLA in 1993.

Today the pressure comes from AI and technology that enable continuous digital surveillance. Algorithms screen résumés, set schedules, score productivity, and recommend who is let go. The questions are the old ones. Who bears the cost of a new efficiency, and what is a worker entitled to know about the decisions made about them.

Every protection has a date, and someone had to fight for it.

  6. RE: albuquerque.masto.host/@abqwor

I missed this when it happened at the end of July. Thanks to @abqworkers for bringing it to my attention. Now that @ProPublica has successfully negotiated a union contract with the @propublicaguild, I can start supporting ProPublica financially, which I've just done to the tune of $5/month. Good timing, with #LaborDay tomorrow.

Support Unions! Billionaires didn't give you the weekend, 8-hour work days, or anything else (including health care).

  8. 📢 Wow, the brave souls at Wikimedia decided they want a union, because who knew editing Wikipedia required so much collective bargaining? 🙄 Maybe they can negotiate for more cat pictures on the homepage while they're at it. 🐱📚

  9. This is the sort of thing that really pisses me off.
Coles using Palantir to crunch huge amounts of data about its stores, workers and suppliers just feels wrong. We’re talking about a company best known for selling groceries, not running a surveillance operation.
Thankfully people pushed back. More than 85,000 signed the campaign, shareholders got involved, and Coles has now said it won’t renew the Palantir contract beyond 2027.
Maybe companies need to remember that not everything that can be monitored should be monitored.
And that ordinary people still have a voice.
