It's not much of a secret that Efnysien has a soft spot for his sister, Branwen, but I feel that's a common trope. At first glance, most may not expect the sheer ferocity of Efnysien's malice, but he will very kindly reveal that side of himself for anyone foolish enough to ask.
I guess the only thing very surprising about Efnysien isn't the level of his remorse but rather that he's capable of it at all.

#WordWeaver 4/7 Who's the hottest character in your book and why?
Depends what you're into. Hotness is in the eye of the beholder after all.
Branwen is the forest princess who launched a thousand ships (alright, not 1000. Let's say a number of ships) from foreign lands to woo her. That's legit Helen of Troy level hot, and I have harped on the similarities of Branwen's story and the Illiad before.
Taliesin is a young, charming, successful musician/poet. On the surface he can be rather attractive, but his dreamy nature makes him seem distant sometimes.
Matholwch is strong, confident, and the supreme king of Ireland. But, there might be a reason he needs to ride a 22-hand stallion around (medieval equivalent of an Italian sports car)
Captain Enid is for those who like their women like they like their coffee: hot, strong, sweet, and willing to deliver 15 lashes to recruits who are late.
Not even going to talk about Bran. Let's just say that the 300' tall man boasts a mighty, expansive, strong spirit of generosity.

From the Magic of Fireside Tales to the Silent Spell of the Written Word
Musing on words both written and spoken, I found myself wondering whether one carries more weight than the other. As an avid reader and writer, words have always held a quiet, enduring enchantment for me. They are far more than marks on a page or sounds in the air. They are vessels of memory, emotion, and wonder.My own heart remains devoted to the physical book. There is something sacred in holding it in my hands, in the soft rustle of turning each page, and in the gentle, immersive surrender as the outside world falls away. In those quiet moments, I do not merely read the story. I live within it.I fully understand and respect that many prefer to listen. Audiobooks and spoken storytelling bring their own warmth, rhythm, and immediacy. We each find our own way into the world of stories, and that beautiful diversity only deepens their magic.Yet however we choose to receive them, stories matter profoundly. Whether passed down through the living continuum of oral tradition or preserved in books that withstand the test of time, words carry real power. They shape meaning, they can harm or heal (hence why I choose to use them gently) and they awaken wonder, knowledge, and remembrance.
Long before stories were captured between covers or summoned by the glow of the silver screen, they lived in the human voice. Around crackling campfires, in torchlit village squares, and beside winter hearths,word-weavers spun worlds from breath and memory. Myths, legends, and folklore journeyed across generations through the oral tradition, fragile yet enduring, reshaped with every telling.There is a singular magic in this ancient way. A storyteller’s voice carries cadence, rhythm, and the subtle art of pause. The flicker of firelight, the hush of gathered listeners, and the shared breath of anticipation create something immediate and communal. For most of human history, this was storytelling’s truest form: alive, ephemeral, and deeply connective. The voices of the Ancestors echoing through time weaves the threads of wisdom earned in experiences earned.Who we were leads to who we are, and in our evolution, who we will become.
Yet, while I honour this rich heritage with all my heart, my own soul has always leaned toward the written word. And this is why I prefer to write my stories rather than narrate them.
Reading invites a quieter, more profound participation.A spoken tale is, in many ways, a performance. The narrator chooses the pace, the inflection, the emotional shading. The listener receives a completed interpretation. It is a gift given aloud.The written story, by contrast, remains beautifully unfinished until it meets the reader’s imagination. Its power feels almost absolute. Once the words are set on the page, they belong entirely to the reader. There is no external voice directing how they should be felt or understood. The story waits patiently, ready to unfold at the reader’s own rhythm and depth.
Psychologically, reading and listening engage the mind in subtly different ways. Reading is an active, self-directed process. We can pause to reflect, re-read a passage that stirs us, or linger over a single sentence until its full resonance settles into the soul. This fosters deeper personal interpretation, stronger emotional connection, and often richer long-term memory. Listening, while immersive and emotionally immediate, moves forward relentlessly in real time. It offers warmth and presence, yet it can sometimes keep us at a slight distance from the most intimate layers of co-creation.
As a reader turns the pages punctuation becomes a delicate instrument of meaning. A comma offers a moment of reflection. The semicolon links two thoughts in graceful companionship. An ellipsis trails into mystery, longing, or unspoken possibility. These are not mere marks on a page. They are part of the emotional architecture, guiding the inner eye and ear.Most powerfully, characters emerge through an act of true co-creation. The author lays the foundation, outline, gesture, and hint of inner life, but the reader breathes soul into them. We lend our own voices, memories, longings, and shadows. No two readers will ever meet exactly the same version of a character. Each of us builds them anew in the private theatre of the mind.This is why reading so often feels exquisitely intimate.
A great book can be so profound because it reaches beyond mere entertainment and touches the very core of who we are. It has the power to comfort us in sorrow, awaken us to new truths, or quietly reshape the way we see the world. Childhood favourites hold a special place in this experience. The stories we loved as children create entire worlds of inner magic that stay with us for a lifetime. Those beloved pages become part of our emotional landscape, offering a sense of wonder, safety, and possibility that we can return to again and again, no matter how many years have passed.
And yet, the line between spoken and written storytelling is rarely absolute. Some of the most magnificent literary works were created specifically for the spoken voice. Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood, subtitled “A Play for Voices,” stands as a luminous example. Written for radio, it is a rich, orchestral celebration of language itself. Thomas’s tumbling, musical prose brings a small Welsh village to vivid life through the dreams, thoughts, and daily rhythms of its inhabitants. Meant to be heard, it reveals how powerfully words can sing when crafted for performance. Even on the page, the sheer beauty of the language invites the inner voice to rise and speak it aloud.
Great literature has always celebrated the power of the told tale in other ways too. Consider Scheherazade, the luminous storyteller of One Thousand and One Nights. Night after night, she wove story after story through the dark hours to soften a king’s heart and save her own life. Her tales became bridges to redemption, wisdom, and healing, turning storytelling itself into a sacred act.This great tapestry of tales has no single author. It was lovingly woven over many centuries by countless anonymous voices across Persia, India, Arabia, and North Africa, passed from lip to ear through ancient oral tradition. It was the French scholar Antoine Galland who first carried these stories westward. His beautiful translation, published in the early years of the eighteenth century, released Scheherazade and her thousand and one enchanted nights into the imagination of Europe, where they blossomed into a timeless wonder that continues to captivate hearts across the world. Scheherazade certainly captured mine! How I loved those fairy tales.
In my novel Torn From The Heart: A Tale of Soulmate Love, I echoed something of this ancient tradition. During a wild storm on the Somerset Levels, the troubled Adam Knight seeks shelter at the mysterious Half Moon Inn. There, the enigmatic Evelyn Blackmore offers him warmth and sanctuary. As the night deepens, she shares fireside stories of love, loss, rejection, and redemption. Gradually, Adam realises these tales mirror the hidden landscapes of his own soul.
What begins as listening becomes transformation.
Evelyn stands in the long lineage of hearthside storytellers. Her words do more than pass the time. They illuminate hidden truths and guide a wandering heart homeward.
Perhaps this shows us that written and spoken storytelling are not rivals, but kindred spirits walking different paths but toward the same destination.
Both seek to make sense of what it means to be human. Both preserve wisdom, stir emotion, and remind us of our shared fragility and wonder. One enchants through the living warmth of the voice. The other awakens magic in the silent spaces of the imagination.One is a gift shared beneath the stars or lamplight. The other is a conversation held in stillness, where punctuation whispers and entire worlds rise, luminous and alive, from the open page.
In the end, we are all storytellers. Whether we speak our tales aloud to our friends and family, or to wider audiences or release them into the quiet hands of readers, we reach for the same eternal light: the deep human need to connect, to understand, and to remember that we are never truly alone in the great story of existence.

#WordWeaver 5/11 What role does romantic love play in your story?
There's a decent bit of romantic love between Branwen and Matholwch in Taliesin B2, because I find it very integral to the story. Otherwise I try to avoid shoving in a ton of romance just for the sake of romance, and there's never any guarantee that the romance will work out so neat and tidy.
The characters fall in love and have desires, because that's human, but love is frequently messy, awkward, and tends to complicate things a lot.
