Do people still play Words with Friends?

I used to play it constantly a few years ago, but I got fed up of the non-stop nagging screens of bonus points, challenges with bots, etc. I just want to play my friends.

I recently jumped back in, but it's already starting to annoy me again 😥

Words With Friends 2 is a showcase of dark patterns:

- Animated pop-up ads where the close button is not in a consistent place, to trick you into clicking on something.

- All-or-nothing notifications, so you can't turn on "it's your turn" and leave off "are you interested in buying candy-colored letter themes? how about now? HOW ABOUT NOW, MOTHER&*#$ER?".

- Games you haven't accepted are lumped in with games you're currently playing, both marked "it's your turn".

Is there an Android alternative to Words With Friends that isn't so toxically aggressive with the ads?

(This is mainly for playing with my 80 y/o mother, so a simple UI is important.)

#WordsWithFriends has gotten steadily worse over the years. Cluttered with "mini-games" and other nonsense and of course notifications about these things that appear just as you are clicking on other stuff.

I had been on an extended break and then gotten back into it. Just now I found that the word strength meter now needs "activation".

I uninstalled. It's over, WWF.

I can see an app in my games folder and remember to see if I played that day. I'm trying for a 365-day badge on Flow Free as I did all the levels. I also try to grab my freebie in #WordsWithFriends.

Are there any #Scrabble like game players out there?
I play #WordFeud with a couple people but I wouldn't mind one or two more to play.

Wordfeud is a lot like words with Friends but the app isn't as slow and kludgy like Words with Friends.

My only complaint about the software is that the tablet mode on Android (or Chromebook) isn't as good as it is on an iPad.
