My word count for the last ~6 months has been in the negatives; because I've been editing! Which shows exactly what I hate about measuring in word counts.
While they're the only real objective measurement we have for our stories as writers, the word count doesn't determine the worth of your novel. Maybe you only need 40k words to tell an effective story, or maybe you need 400k!
Same goes for daily word counts. My daily has been well into the negatives while I've been trimming the fat from my novel, and as I start plotting and researching for my next book. Sometimes life just gets in the way and you can't find time to write more than a couple words in a few months. And that's okay! Breaks are allowed.
But word counts shame you for not just putting your head down and writing, ignoring everything else that goes into a novel. Including the author's mental health.
At the end of the day, really all that matters is that you're having fun telling your story, rules and expectations be damned.
If you've stuck around this long, check out my profile! I post about everything writing/book related.

I just spent four hours writing and put down almost 3800 words. Man, I'd almost forgotten how AWESOME that feels!

📚 Behold! An "intrepid" writer attempts to scale the monumental peak of word count with a "short" history that's anything but. 💡 Spoiler alert: it's more about self-promotion than Cerro Torre's actual controversy. 🌄 #MountaineeringMarketing

Writing Sometimes Philosophical @writingsometimesphilosophical.wordpress.com@writingsometimesphilosophical.wordpress.com ·How many words does an average novel have?
From Google AI:
The average word count for a standard adult novel is generally between 70,000 and 100,000 words. While 40,000 words is considered the minimum threshold, most fiction publishers look for manuscripts in the 80k–100k range, with 90,000 words often cited as the “sweet spot” for debut authors. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Word Counts by Genre (Adult Fiction)
- Literary/Contemporary Fiction: 80,000–100,000 words.
- Fantasy & Sci-Fi: 90,000–120,000 words.
- Thriller & Mystery: 70,000–90,000 words.
- Romance: 50,000–100,000 words.
- Historical Fiction: 90,000–110,000 words. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key Considerations
- YA Fiction: Generally lower, aiming for 50,000–70,000 words.
- Debut Authors: It is crucial for new authors to stick closer to these guidelines. Over 110,000–120,000 words can be considered too long, signaling a need for heavy editing to agents and publishers.
- Novellas: These typically fall between 17,500 and 40,000 words. [1, 2, 3, 4]
These guidelines are based on industry standards, ensuring the story is well-developed but not excessively long.

How did the last two months go in terms of my word count or publishing goals?I'm getting more mentally organized and thinking about what I want to get down on paper, but actual words have been slow.
I've gotten the routine of making nut milk every 3-4 days down, and I finally got the heat pump dryer my hubby wanted working. It has *TWO* lint filters. WHO KNEW?? And I need a tiny vacuum to get them clean.

I see so much negatively in the book world on social media, from readers, writers, editors, artists & more. It can feel demoralizing. As a writer, just write a story that feels right. If you have a publisher insisting on so many words, okay, but sticking with a certain word count can bloat a book. #books #writer #wordcount

30.5k words. I learned more things about football. People keep trying to explain to the protagonist that he doesn't have to be responsible for everything, but he doesn't have a frame of reference to grasp that. Not that I know what that's like or anything...

I barely slept last night. But I am over 20k words on the urban fantasy football story. #WordCount

I have averaged around 1666 words every day since Dec 12 on the urban fantasy football story. Which I think means I need 52 more days to get to 100k, which is probably the length to aim for. If my math is right. #writing #WordCount

I have lost all patience with "content creators". If you are going to promote a topic then stick to it. I don't need to know the back story of when you bought your first computer when I've been promised information about an app replacement. Headlines should be a summary of an article's content not just a way to get people to click.
If you write recipes, just give me the recipe. I don't need the 3 page description of you going shopping for the ingredients or the litany of tweaks made across generations as a recipe was handed down.

Write Like An Auctioneer
There's a cadence to an auctioneer's sing-song voice, the way that (usually) he calls out the prices, tries to entice the bid to go higher (do I hear four forty? how about four fifty? Okay, now four sixy....) out of an audience that could be fairly receptive to the item being offered or not. I've seen it at the livestock auctions I used to attend. Som

A quotation from La Rochefoucauld
As great minds can express much in a few words, so small minds have the contrary talent of talking a great deal without saying anything at all.

Being fundamentally incapable of writing to a word limit, I have just met my quota of allotted words and know that I must continue and then come back and delete.
At least I have become one with this writing practice. I like to think that it helps me hone my argument.
(This is a happier interpretation than "inadequate outlining on the front end")

@annathepiper Reworking goals feels so much like changing the goalposts. It’s not. It’s so not. Assessment time and debriefing projects is not passing judgement on self — it’s just us glamorizing some of our goals over others (like word count). New Month! New Goals! Writing is being done! Every word is closer to the celebration!
