Walkable cities should become a pleonasm. #woonerf

My council is going to put in a zebra crossing near my street. I wrote to the m last year about making my whole street a #woonerf which got shut down pretty firmly by the mayor, but now they're going to build a zebra crossing. It's a step in the right direction!

One of the most intriguing & misunderstood street design and place-making ideas in the world is the Dutch #Woonerf, or “living street.” When I studied woonerfs while working for the City of Groningen, I learned the key is street design that makes it impossible to drive faster than people can walk.

Inspired by the Dutch "living street", Łódź has translated the "woonerf" from a residential to a commercial context. Privileging pedestrians and calming traffic to 15 km/hr, the name and elements are retained—removing the curb and adding greenery, texture, seating, and lighting. #woonerf #LivingStreets

@straphanger In Belgium we have also *temporary* school streets, at the times when school starts and stops. For about half an hour, the street is only accessible to pedestrians and bikes.

Permanent school streets are of course even better.

Just paged through the comparison tab on my street’s #telraam, and it’s nice to see it confirm that we’re a (relatively) very pedestrian street, which suggests my dream of making it an explicit #woonerf isn’t completely bonkers.

This is of course at least in part a selection effect (most of the telraams in town are focused on higher-traffic streets) but still interesting to see.

Behold a pre-woonerf.

The traffic signs are there, the regulatory machinery in place — so legally it already is an official woonerf. (It even has traffic calming measures with concrete blocks and, yes, also paint.)

But the true street reconversion still needs to happen (and they’re on the planning).

Personally, I like this way of working. Don’t let the (distant future) roadworks be used as an excuse for not already taking action.
