Cooking Potatoes Off-the-Grid
A pressure cooker works well on a wood stove burning FREE fuel.
Sticks you can pick up from the ground are a renewable resource. They burn and produce heat, which is perfect for cooking.
No matter how many sticks I gather from the woods around my house, I always find more. The trees continue making sticks! They need CO2, water, and sunlight to generate wood. Trees cannot grow without carbon.

so, this little pile of ash, sycamore and beech logs are waiting to be split and stacked in the next weeks.
Bluetooth speaker with very Loud Tiesto at 7am awaits me thinks.

It's a cold morning, here near the Bay.

Another activity I like to do on snowy days is take an egg carton, tear off the edges & top, rip these into tiny pieces & fill the cups with those pieces. Then I melt some wax on the wood stove and pour it in the cups to soak through the torn pieces. After this cools, I tear apart the cups and use them as fire starters. I do this over freezer paper so any wax that soaks through can be peeled off when solid and used next time. #recycle #reuse #repurpose #FireStarter #WoodStove #FirePlace #FirePit

Old New England rhyme:
Candlemas Day, Candlemas Day
Half your wood, and half your hay.Candlemas day is tomorrow. How about ALL my wood.
I'm at least through the '25 - '26 planned wood. Luckily I'm two years ahead, but getting into less optimal dryness. If I also go through the planned '26-27 pile, I'm going to hit Maple cut last fall.

@mfennvt Nice, an easy win, especially if you have a big, thrift store lobster pot or something you otherwise don't care about re mineralization.
Also TIL about passive #WoodStove fans - powered by radiant heat, blows the warm (and moist) air across the room. Cheaper options available than this one: https://rutland.com/products/rutland-oscillating-wood-stove-fan-5-blade-heat-powered

Today is a mini split day, a mid January day in Vermont that will get into the 40s. (Mini split is super cheap to run in this weather, and will save me hauling wood for the day).
The soapstone stove is still 100F from 16 pounds of wood burned 14 hours ago. First time the stove has been this cool since getting it, and this cat found it right away. Other cat, taking a more conservative approach.

Have a happy and safe New Year's Eve everyone! -
Here's the end result on the fireplace set. Not perfect but it's also 70-ish years old. Still, it's an attractive set and will last decades more. The recipient seemed to like it. #restore #reuse #fireplace #woodstove #brass

Not a great photo. First break in burn of my Woodstock Progress Hybrid stove, just installed. Very psyched for this upgrade. #woodstove

Fifth Street saw two fire emergencies Xmas morning, but the smoke in this photo was not from them, but from our woodstove, due to a micro-weather inversion. #fire #fireemergency #emergency #smoke #woodsmoke #woodstove #stove #smoky #temperatureinversion #inversion #weather

Has anyone successfully baked cookies on top of a woodstove? Or somehow inside?
I would love to make a small batch for Winter Solstice but only cooking is woodstove or outdoor campfire.

There are so many convenient things about having a wood stove for heat. I keep pots on it to humidify the house. Putting spices in those pots makes the house smell nice. I make candles this time of year & it was easy to melt the wax on the stove top. I'm defrosting dinner over one of my pots, like a double boiler. Plus I'm not freezing my ass off. #WoodStove

The first fire in the Morsø. It needs to be broken in; first with kindling, then more kindling, then with kindling and a small log. Been waiting since September for the inspector to inspect the installation but he still hasn't come by and we're cold. We're home today and it's a small fire so figured it is safe to start the breaking in process. #WoodStove #Morsø #fire

Edit - thank you for all the helpful advice, folks!
Details about the subpar storage options - any stack would only be inches from the house. The biggest stack I could store is half a face cord.
*******
Are there any firewood Mastodon folks out here? I have a question about storing seasoned wood for our wood stove but our outdoor space is a bit... cramped, with the only viable spaces for storage being subpar at best. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Hello, my name is Snowy, and as it's getting cold, the humans have started lighting the fire in my room.
My other half isn't bothered, but soon after it's lit, I usually hop up and relax in front of it 😁

In the distant past I've been through all kinds of stoves, catalyst and non-cat.
For the last maybe 14 years been using a Jotul 3CB, non catalyst I got used. I rebuilt it maybe 6 or 7 years ago. It's still worth what I paid for it, I think.
Efficient. Chimney always clean except for a layer of soot -- no creosote.
It gets a little hard to control with our chimney in real cold, a little small in the coldestThe Woodstock Progress Hybrid is going to be an entirely different beast.

Yesterday in a fit of madness I put a deposit down on a really nice woodstove, by all accounts just a fabulous wood burner, a Woodstock Progress.
I've been burning wood for heat for many many years, and I try to do it as cleanly and efficiently as possible. My favorite stove, in a different incarnation, was a Tulikivi, a 3500 pound soapstone masonry stove, bigger than a refrigerator. In a superinsulated house. One clean burning super hot fire would heat the thing for 24 hours. 1/

I earned my girl scout badge for #firestarting while dog sitting at my friend's place who has a #woodstove. He uses it exclusively for heat despite having a functioning furnace. He had on the furnace to 21C/70F for me during the day & 18C/64F at night, so I tried my hand at making a cozy fire in the evening while relaxing with the dog.

Making Masala Chai on a Wood Burning Stove with Snow All-Around
Join me on an incredible outdoor adventure as I revisit the wood-burning stove from a previous video, this time using proper wood and preparing authentic Indian chai in a winter wonderland setting. https://youtu.be/EOvxX07lkVo?si=M2L63X0xjymhbZaE&list=PLEt7TP8wqb183ShJD4HxTs48UZFPApSuG Filmed at Swain’s Lock in Maryland, the landscape is a snowy paradise after a recent blizzard, with temperatures at -5°C. I start by lighting the stove using twigs and a solid fuel tablet, demonstrating […]https://outdoorsyindians.com/making-masala-chai-on-a-wood-burning-stove-with-snow-all-around/

Unboxing and Testing Gas One Wood Burning Camping Stove
Watch the video (below) on the Outdoorsy Indians YouTube channel as I unbox and test the Gas One Camping Stove, a stainless steel portable wood-burning stove perfect for camping, hiking, backpacking, and picnics. This compact stove can utilize wood, leaves, pine cones, alcohol, and solid fuel. It has a grill grid and foldable pot stand for versatile cooking options.
