I say again: People who burn wood in a town should be exiled to the countryside. Yesterday was terrible with the amount of #woodsmoke my furnace's "fresh air" system was sucking into the house, meaning I had to repeatedly turn off the furnace for an hour, hoping the wind would shift before I turned it back on. Two air filters running at max now, and looks like it's going to be the same sort of evening. #asthma

When I walked into the city last night to see some completed renovations I realised that ‘the moment’ had come. It wasn’t particularly cold, but I guess it is now October…and so I could smell #woodsmoke wafting all over as I walked in.
Folks are lighting their wood burning stoves. It’s bad enough they are doing this as secondary heating, but what else apart from wood are they typically burning?

It's Easter weekend. The weather is expected to be a bit better than we've had through winter, and lots of people have holidays. So, is this a nice time to go cycling ?
Unfortunately not in the Netherlands.
Over the Easter weekend this country is held ransom by religious (and non-religious) lunatics who light absolutely enormous fires made up of assorted rubbish and these cause ridiculous levels of air pollution, especially of particulates, which blanket the entire country. The Germans also do this, so an easterly wind (which is predicted) doesn't blow the smoke away but just brings extra smoke from Germany.
As a result of this you basically don't want to breath outside on the Easter weekend, let alone do any exercise which would make you breath deeper.
There are fires planned for this evening, tomorrow evening and Monday evening. So there's no quick escape.
The selfish people make Easter in the Netherlands almost as much "fun" as New Year's Eve !
Completely unrelated story: There's also currently a well publicized national shortage of asthma medication, as if that's of any importance at all to the selfish smoke enthusiasts.

@noodlemaz I worry about this too…we have idyllic stretches of river with house barges on, but the stench from the stoves is unbearable.
I tried to get flyers put up about the damage it does to people’s health in my local GP surgery, but they refused.
How do we get the message out to the wider public about the dangers of #woodsmoke when central and local government together with NHS seem completely indifferent?

A Dutch government website tells people when weather conditions are such that burning wood is an incredibly irresponsible thing to do. Unfortunate, almost everyone ignores it. At the moment it's showing "code rood" for almost the entire country but the air outside is thick with smoke.
Taking a breath is unhealthy because people keep heating their homes by burning wood. Instead of removing fireplaces from homes, people are installing them. Instead of spending money on insulating or efficient heating they're spending it on installing fireplaces, as if this is the 18th century and we have no other choice...
As a result the air outside is unhealthy and your can't ventilate your home by opening a window. Unfortunately it's also unhealthy to seal your home so that no air comes in.
I've started a DIY project of building a system to ventilate our home only with air that's been pushed through a HEPA filter with a fan. Thus far it's working quite well. No stink inside unless we open a door or window and reasonable co2 concentration.
