And there is a much wider significance, for me at least. What are the drivers for the #NatureEmergency & #ClimateEmergency? What structures & systems can we imagine & build that address these drivers?
Hence my interest in #WoodMeadows, #ForestGarden, #commons, #colonialism, #capitalism and #fascism. They are linked.

@jaztrophysicist thanks for this. I mentioned my interest in #WoodMeadows and she recommended a book called Tir by Carwyn Graves, which is a stomping read. I'm not 100% onboard with everything he writes but still very relevant for ecology and conservation work https://carwyngraves.com/tir-the-story-of-the-welsh-landscape/

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to a benefactor who's made it 100% easier for me to get to the 14th European Conference on #Ecological #Restoration in #Tartu, #Estonia. Amazing line-up: https://sere2024.org/programme-info/
I will be concentrating on #WoodMeadows, human managed spaces which are amongst the most biodiverse habitats in the world.
The key question is, how can we emulate this in other places?
I'll be blogging at https://www.natureworks.org.uk/blog/

How to live in balance with #nature?
In tandem with ontological shift in socio-economic systems, let's explore *what worked before capitalism*.
A #WoodMeadow is one example (think landscape scale #FoodForest #ForestGarden).
Support my trip to find out more about #WoodMeadows at 14th #Ecological #Restoration conference in Estonia.
54% of the way there! Thank you 🙏

I'm talking about the #WoodMeadow in a wider social context as a model for enhancing #biodiversity, with the brilliant Sarah Wilson on #RootsAndAll #gardening #podcast.
Same principles can be applied in a #garden - it's essentially a #ForestGarden #FoodForest.
I have a fundraiser to attend the 14th European Conference on #Ecological #Restoration https://sere2024.org/, to see & discuss #WoodMeadows firsthand. https://ko-fi.com/natureworks

SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT
I think a #WoodMeadow is an excellent model of how human activity can *increase* #biodiversity.
Support my fundraiser to go to 14th #Ecological #Restoration #Conference to see and learn about #WoodMeadows 1st hand.
They're like landscape scale #ForestGarden #FoodForest: productive, light-touch, self-sustaining.
51% there!

We went to Coed Ty Canol again, #WoodPasture in #Pembrokeshire #SirGar #Cymru
Beautiful, sheltered from the wind, brimming with wildlife.
A #WoodMeadow is incredibly biodiverse & a model for light-touch productive land management
Support my fundraiser for #ecological #conference in Estonia this August so I can find out more first-hand with #WoodMeadows
-
I went on #RootsAndAll #podcast this morning to talk about #WoodMeadows. Sarah Wilson who runs the #gardening podcast is brililant, and we've known each other for a while. Bit nerve-wracking but always a pleasure talking with her.

Oh, and I have a fundraiser for a trip to #ecology #restoration conference in August, 50% there, help out if you can afford to, thank you 🙏

Ty Canol #WoodMeadow again today. Windy but in the wood, protected. A beautiful space.
I have fundraiser for learning more about #WoodMeadows at conference in Estonia in late August. Will write lots and take lots of photos too, bring ideas back to #Wales

50% of my goal of £940 for my trip to #Estonia for #Ecology #Restoration Conference end of August!
I'm going for the #WoodMeadow, a traditional, low-intensity, high-biodiversity land use. 60% tree cover, 40% herb layer. Combine with recommoning land for local communities, with direct democracy & providing #sustainable livelihoods.
Photo is Ty Canol #WoodPasture in #SirGar #Pembrokeshire, #Cymru #Wales. Just look at that #habitat!

#TyCanol in #SirGar #Pembrokeshire is an example of #WoodPasture, very similar to #WoodMeadow in it's glorious #biodiversity.
Help fund my trip to the 14th European Conference on #Ecological #Restoration to research & see #WoodMeadows in #Estonia https://sere2024.org/ so I can help bring them to #Cymru #Wales
Thank you 🙏 🌳

A #WoodMeadow is one of the most #biodiverse #ecosystems *in the world*, with up to 70 species of vascular #plants per square metre. Critically, “Biodiversity of the meadow ecosystems is connected to human use and it declines significantly if this use ceases” (Kull, Kukk & Lotman 2003)
Help me get #sustainable #WoodMeadows established in #Cymru #Wales, support my fundraiser to visit the 14th European Conference on #Ecological #Restoration
Thank you 🙏 🌳

A #WoodMeadow is way to productively manage land with huge biodiversity gains.
Help me get to the 14th European Conference on #Ecological #Restoration so I can research how to bring #sustainable #WoodMeadows to #Cymru #Wales https://sere2024.org/
My fundraiser: https://ko-fi.com/natureworks/goal?g=49

A #WoodMeadow is an ancient, balanced & flexible approach to land management.
I believe bringing #WoodMeadows land & practices back into #common ownership is one way to restore #nature.
I am nearly halfway on a fundraiser for a trip to the 14th European Conference on Ecological Restoration in Estonia in late August, where #WoodMeadows & their management will feature heavily. Please consider supporting me if you can afford it. Thank you 🙏 🌳

Went to Ty Canol wood pasture in Pembrokeshire. I think there are cattle, sheep and horses on different parts of land about the place.
Apparently site of very important lichen in the UK? There was a lot of Bracken, so possibly not managed so much for vascular plants.
Lovely space, very varied. And very #WoodMeadow.
I want to create #common, #community #WoodMeadows in #WestWales, as response to #NatureEmwrgency. My fundraiser for #ecology conference in #Estonia:
-
Three Hagges #Woodmeadow is an inspirational project for #WoodMeadows, which have the among the highest biodiversity of vascular plants *in the world* yet are also maanged productively.
https://www.plantlife.org.uk/our-work/three-hagges-woodmeadow-nature-reserve
I’m going to the 14th European Conference on Ecological Restoration to find out more, and to create a #Common #WoodMeadow in #WestWales
I have a fundraiser to help with the expenses, any donation gratefully received 🙏
-
I believe it’s essential for #ClimateEmergency & #NatureEmergency to offer alternative, biodiverse land practices. For me, it’s a #WoodMeadow, a landscape extension of a #ForestGarden.
I’m off to the European Conference on Ecological Restoration in Estonia in August to discuss & research #WoodMeadows & their management. And I’ll be publishing copious notes & photos! Any help towards the costs would be greatly appreciated, thank you 🙏 🌳

OMG. Just found out that there's a Welsh version of #WoodMeadows! Fridd or Coedcae (latter translates as Wood Field).
And I've been put in touch with the county archivist, so loads to find out
-
I went to Gardd Enfys 🌈 (Rainbow Garden) yesterday for a site visit. Ruth is doing amazing work in a multi-faceted community garden. This field planted with 18 #native tree species. Another field managed as #meadow. Theres an #orchard, veg beds, polytunnel & workshop shed This is what a #WoodMeadow feels like, flexible tapestry of habitats & people
My #WoodMeadows fundraiser, reaarching how they can work in modern setting
https://ko-fi.com/natureworks/goal?g=43 -
I wrote a short post on my Ko-fi fundrasiing page about #WoodMeadows
-
I had a moment today, big wave of emotion whilst stood at the edge of a #WildFlower #Meadow in #Ceredigion. I was thinking about #WoodMeadows and how the key essence is the *relationships* with the people that live and work with the #WoodMeadow, whether they’re coppice workers, orchardists or hay makers.
The edge of the meadow illustrated this beautifully, with Pignut (Conopodium majus), Bracken, Blackthorn, Bluebell and Bugle thriving together

I’ve started writing my #Wildlife #ForestGarden #newsletter again! Latest issue is here:
https://buttondown.email/natureworks/archive/wood-meadows-are-my-new-jam/And yes, #WoodMeadows are my new jam. I’ll be writing more about them as a model for human activity creating biodiversity, in a democratic and engaging way. I am, to put it mildly, quite excited.
I’m also promoting my fundraiser so that I can go to the #European #conference on #Ecological #Restoration in Estonia. #WoodMeadow heaven

How do we live together in #nature? #WoodMeadows, a managed & productive #ecosystem, can achieve this balance, a model of human activity benefitting #biodiversity.
And I want to create a #WoodMeadow in #Wales.
For research, I went to 14th European Conference on #Ecological Restoration in August in #Estonia, where wood meadows are amongst most biodiverse sites in the world
#ClimateEmergency #NatureEmergency #ForestGarden #Gardening #Agroforestry #Commons
Thank you to all my supporters 💚 🙏

This is the conference. It looks absolutely amazing
Of specific interest is the trip to the Vainu wooded meadow in Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve. But the whole conference looks incredible
-
#WoodMeadows (think landscape scale #ForestGarden) are an example of how humans can live in balance within nature.
I want to create a *Common* #WoodMeadow in West Wales.
There's an amazing ecological restoration conference in Estonia (home of *the most biodiverse area in the world*) this August. I can't afford to go, so I have made my first ever fundraiser 😳 Trying to raise £940!!
-
My latest jam is #WoodMeadows
Think ancient, multi-functional, productive ecosystem. A wood. And a meadow. Like a #ForestGarden.
The quote & paper that sparked my fire:
“Neither in any other community of Western Europe, nor anywhere in the tropics, does the number of vascular plant species within a few square meters reach the numbers counted on the Estonian wooded meadows.”https://grwd.cc/paper-when-culture-supports-biodiversity
