Today was a holiday in lieu in South Africa. Yesterday was our National Women’s Day, celebrated on August 9th, not March 8th like much of the world.
South Africa celebrates National Women’s Day on August 9th to commemorate the 1956 Women’s March in Pretoria. On this day, over 20 000 women of all races marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the oppressive pass laws of the apartheid regime. This historic event is a symbol of resistance and unity in the struggle for gender equality and justice in South Africa.
🌐 In contrast, International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8th. This date was established by the United Nations to honour women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality worldwide.
Here we had a day remembering the courage of South African women and the fight for equality. 🇿🇦

Today, as we mark Women’s Day in South Africa, we do so not merely as a national observance, but as a theological and moral summons. On 9 August 1956, thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings in protest of pass laws, refusing to accept systems that denied human dignity and restricted freedom. Their courage continues to speak into our present moment. As people of faith, we affirm that every woman is created in the image and likeness of God, for Scripture declares: "So God created humankind in his image, male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27). Therefore, any system, attitude, practice, or silence that diminishes women stands against the justice of God.
The liberation of women is not a side issue for the Church; it belongs to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In Christ, we are made one, and no person is less worthy, less gifted, or less called because of gender. Paul reminds us that "there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28b). This does not erase our differences, but it forbids the Church from using difference as a reason for exclusion, silence, or oppression.
At BMC, we are called to be a community where women are honoured, heard, protected, encouraged, and invited to participate fully in the life and mission of the Church. We give thanks for women who lead, pray, teach, visit, serve, organise, care, and carry the burdens of families and communities, often without recognition. Yet gratitude alone is not enough. We must make space, open doors, share responsibility, confront harmful attitudes, and ensure that our church life reflects the justice, compassion, and the love of Christ. Therefore, women of 1956 teach us that faith must be embodied in courageous action. We encourage every member of our BMC family to honour the women among us not only with words, but with action; not only on Women’s Day, but in the daily life of the Church and society.

Today's #grandma recording from October 2021 I couldn't transcribe in one round. I is 28:44 long and I had to stop after 20 minutes and over 160 bulleted lines of notes.
It mainly revolved around the mandatory social year, grandma did at her aunt Sophie #Steurenthaler ( https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-54 ), who lost her husband to the war in that time. She was crying all day for months, which made grandma furious. She promised herself, that she would never be like this. And she said, she wasn't, when her own husband passed away about 20 years later.
After she left from Sophie, since that one didn't have work for her anymore, she managed to work for an evacuated orphanage in her neighborhood. She had huge fights with her dad about it, since she made 1 Mark an hour, while he only received 38 Pfennig with working in the forest for the state. I found it funny, that this story popped up this close to #InternationalWomensDay, where #GenderPayGap is one of the central topics usually.

unless you've actually literally lived as a woman you cannot know the monumental amount of sexual harassment we face and fear on a day-to-day basis. doubly so for trans women. every single moment i am alone in public i am deathly anxious that i could be harassed (sexually or otherwise) or hate-crimed or whatever. and the worst part is, there's nothing i could do about it. the perpetrator would get away scot-free. the seattle police department is literally full of nazis they would not care in the least bit, and in fact they might hate crime me again if i tried reporting one
however bad you think it is, it's worse. whatever you're imagining, it is exponentially more horrendous
i know this, it is burned into my brain, and yet i go out anyway, in my usual extremely-queer slutty outfits. like i am basically a walking pride flag. because, y'know what they say -- courage is being afraid but doing the thing anyway. if i stop going out places just because i get sexually harassed semi-regularly, the bigots and creeps would win

An amazing demonstration for International Women’s Day took place in Berlin yesterday, with an estimated 30,000 attendees, most of whom were women.
Later, when I searched the Fediverse for posts about the demonstration, I could only find three profiles other than my own.
This made me wonder about the discrepancy between what happens in the streets and what is reflected on social media. Social media can be a powerful space for political expression, dialogue, and connection. However, it requires a critical mass of users.
Some time ago, I ran a small poll asking women if patriarchal dynamics and male behavior on Mastodon, which is still largely dominated by white men, make participation harder.
Out of 169 responses, about 59% said yes (23% totally agree and 36% partially agree). Just 20% totally disagree. [1]
Even though that poll is far from representative, I couldn't forget the result when I noticed how little discussion there was here about the 30,000-person feminist demonstration in Berlin.
For the Fediverse to be a viable alternative to mainstream platforms, it must reflect the diversity and energy of offline movements. In my opinion, suggesting that "normies" should remain on Bluesky is not the way to go.
