Colonia Aurora’s Women’s Day gift bag sparked a very awkward national conversation

Dear Cherubs, in Colonia Aurora, Misiones, a Women’s Day celebration turned into a public-relations skid mark after the municipality handed out cleaning supplies as prizes and posed the winners for photos. The event was meant to honor local women, but the visual language did the exact opposite and the internet noticed immediately.

THE PHOTO OP
Misiones Online reported that the municipality’s annual event included talks, music and recreational activities, and that more than 200 people attended. But the image that escaped into the wild was not the speech or the concert; it was women smiling with brooms, buckets and squeegees on a day that is supposed to recognize equality, not repackage housework as a prize.

Página/12 and Infobae both described the same basic scene: prizes linked to domestic chores, posted from the municipality’s own social media, followed by a wave of criticism. That is the kind of clue that tells you the problem was not just what happened, but how proudly it was photographed.

THE DEFENSE
Mayor Carlos Goring told local media the cleaning items were part of a mime game and were not the only gifts handed out. He argued the day also included reflection, health talks and other prizes, but once the optics have gone viral, explanations tend to arrive carrying a very small umbrella.

The municipality itself is a small one, with a little over 10,000 residents, tucked in Misiones near the Uruguay River and known for tobacco, yerba mate, soy and an increasingly important pineapple harvest, according to Infobae and DataClave. That is the kind of place where a community event can feel intimate and well-intended, right up until a photo turns it into a national punchline.

The blunt truth is that International Women’s Day carries a century-long history of labor, rights and political struggle, so a broom can never really be “just a joke” once it becomes the centerpiece. A playful game may have been the intent, but the message received by many viewers was a shrugging remix of old stereotypes, which is why the backlash spread so fast.

As noted by thisclaimer.com, the story is less about one municipal blunder than about the gap between intent and image. In the age of instant sharing, that gap can turn a local tribute into a national embarrassment before the mop water has even dried.

Colonia Aurora probably meant to stage a warm, community-minded event. Instead, it managed to hand critics a perfectly packaged symbol of exactly what not to do on 8M, and that is a hard lesson to sweep under the rug.

The responses were thoughtful and deeply personal, celebrating mothers, mentors, colleagues, teachers, and many others whose strength and support shape everyday journeys.

Today's #grandma recording from October 2021 I couldn't transcribe in one round. I is 28:44 long and I had to stop after 20 minutes and over 160 bulleted lines of notes.

It mainly revolved around the mandatory social year, grandma did at her aunt Sophie #Steurenthaler ( https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-54 ), who lost her husband to the war in that time. She was crying all day for months, which made grandma furious. She promised herself, that she would never be like this. And she said, she wasn't, when her own husband passed away about 20 years later.

After she left from Sophie, since that one didn't have work for her anymore, she managed to work for an evacuated orphanage in her neighborhood. She had huge fights with her dad about it, since she made 1 Mark an hour, while he only received 38 Pfennig with working in the forest for the state. I found it funny, that this story popped up this close to #InternationalWomensDay, where #GenderPayGap is one of the central topics usually.

unless you've actually literally lived as a woman you cannot know the monumental amount of sexual harassment we face and fear on a day-to-day basis. doubly so for trans women. every single moment i am alone in public i am deathly anxious that i could be harassed (sexually or otherwise) or hate-crimed or whatever. and the worst part is, there's nothing i could do about it. the perpetrator would get away scot-free. the seattle police department is literally full of nazis they would not care in the least bit, and in fact they might hate crime me again if i tried reporting one

however bad you think it is, it's worse. whatever you're imagining, it is exponentially more horrendous

An amazing demonstration for International Women’s Day took place in Berlin yesterday, with an estimated 30,000 attendees, most of whom were women.

Later, when I searched the Fediverse for posts about the demonstration, I could only find three profiles other than my own.

This made me wonder about the discrepancy between what happens in the streets and what is reflected on social media. Social media can be a powerful space for political expression, dialogue, and connection. However, it requires a critical mass of users.

Some time ago, I ran a small poll asking women if patriarchal dynamics and male behavior on Mastodon, which is still largely dominated by white men, make participation harder.

Out of 169 responses, about 59% said yes (23% totally agree and 36% partially agree). Just 20% totally disagree. [1]

Even though that poll is far from representative, I couldn't forget the result when I noticed how little discussion there was here about the 30,000-person feminist demonstration in Berlin.

For the Fediverse to be a viable alternative to mainstream platforms, it must reflect the diversity and energy of offline movements. In my opinion, suggesting that "normies" should remain on Bluesky is not the way to go.

🌷 Happy Women's Day! Meet Minna Canth. Yes, pronounced almost like that other word. And honestly? Perfect. She gave the patriarchy exactly the kind of energy it deserved since 1844.

Finland's original feminist and playwright, she fought for women's and workers' rights when most people thought a woman's biggest choice was which apron to wear. Her plays were so sharp they made the establishment sweat. She was the first Finnish woman to have her own flag day (March 19th).

"Kun naiset ovat suljetut riveistä pois, on silloin toinen puoli ihmiskuntaa lamassa, ja luonnollisesti toinenkin puoli semmoisesta epäsuhtaisesta tilasta kärsii."

Drawn in early 2025 during the fear of diagnosis, it embodies a dazed mental state. The result is a double feeling: relief for no cancer, rage for the unnecessary loss.
