  1. Late #mondog, because of *waves at everything*

So we went on the longer, quieter river walk this evening to calm down and recharge.

This is one of the tributary rivers, low enough to walk around in.

When Lusha isn't grinning from ear to ear, she looks more wolfy.

  5. BIG TREE fell in the road yesterday. Lusha is unimpressed.

It's one of the big 300yr old beech trees that line the Old Road by the river - a lot of them are dying / been cut down for safety last year.

This one looked OK, but was obviously rotten inside.

  7. Although wolves use varied vocalizations to express themselves, howls are certainly the most popular.

Just like us, each wolf has a unique voice so distinctive features of each individual’s howl allow wolves to identify each other.

If you listen carefully to Silas + Nikai, you'll notice that their howls are unique yet somehow come together to create the most beautiful music.

  13. German officials hosted a #wolf summit to discuss wolves. Livestock organizations vehemently protested any protection of wolves, stating instead that they would like to hunt wolves and see them eliminated from Germany.

But most people and prominent conservation figures are highlighting the lack of scientific evidence supporting a hunt and also calling out the hypocrisy of Germans wanting to ban trophy hunting in other countries but not their own.

We've had the privilege of witnessing Rosa grow from a newborn pup into the intelligent, loving, and fierce wolf that she is today. Her tenacity inspires us, and we're so thankful that her children were raised by this powerful female - they will be better wolves because of her.

    We love you, Rosa!

  24. Raising pups is a family affair, so it is natural for all the wolves to pitch in!

Older siblings help out by regurgitating food for young pups; they'll also protect and babysit them. While pitching in, wolves will learn critical parenting strategies and techniques from their parents for when they have pups of their own.

Passing down knowledge from one generation to the next allows families to maintain traditions unique to their pack.

  25. Last week, USFWS announced the passing of red wolf 1849F (featured on the right), the matriarch of the Milltail family.

Although the soon-to-be 13 yr old is no longer with us on the wild landscape of North Carolina, her captivating spirit lives on in her daughter (left) & grandpups, and we will continue the fight to safeguard the wild legacy she leaves behind.

Only 13 red wolves are known to remain in the wild.

  26. The USFWS said it won't prohibit coyote hunting in parts of Arizona & New Mexico, where the animals are sometimes mistaken for endangered Mexican gray wolves, despite 11 examples of wolves shot by people who mistook them for coyotes.

Conservation organizations, including the WCC, filed a petition to protect coyotes under the ESA due to their similar appearance to Mexican wolves - Coyotes can be killed year-round in AZ & NM.

  28. Did you know that cooperative living allows wolves to limit their population? For example, they control the numbers within their family group by only letting certain members breed. Self-regulation ensures that these essential apex predators do not overexploit their resources.

  29. As of now, 256 wolves have been killed in Montana's controversial wolf hunt.

With snares, traps, and bait, people are killing these wolves for fun.

It's outrageous that in the 21st century, bloodlust continues to drive the wolf management policies in states like Montana, Idaho, & Wyoming.

Call on the US Interior to prioritize conservation over bloodsport by relisting wolves in the N. Rockies to protect them from this cruelty.

  31. The death toll in Montana's controversial wolf hunt has increased to 254.

It's a sad reality that wolves in Montana face traps, bullets, and snares when they should be focused on the spring arrival of their pups.

Call on the U.S. Department of Interior to prioritize conservation over bloodsport.

Please TAKE ACTION to urge them to enact an emergency listing to protect wolves in the Northern Rockies → bit.ly/3XmkAwz

  32. For decades, farmers and ranchers — and government agencies — have been killing wolves to protect livestock.

But there are nonlethal alternatives, and even better, these solutions are more permanent than lethal methods.

Kill a wolf, and there’s another wolf behind him, eager to attack. Keep a wolf away, and the rest of his pack will stay away too. They may even help keep other packs away.
