  1. In the midst of a Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Mariesii Lilacina’ grows a self-sown Achillea, maybe Yarrow, hard to know and very difficult to spot. Their flowers are absolutely identical in colour. Even their flower heads are similar in shape. Is this a case of perfect colour harmony or plant intelligence using colour as camouflage?

  2. Previously, a small part of the garden by the side of the house was only grass, a tree, a few shrubs and hedging to the side and back - and it was a bit unloved.
Since the transformation, the distinction between inside and outdoors has been blurred. Sitting in the living room you can now not be quite certain where you are. The garden seems to be intent on coming into the house.
I have written this as a blog post: wolfkettler.com/blog/this-morn

  3. We also have rabbits again. So far, relatively well behaved, sticking to the grass for culinary needs. Apart, that is, from one of the daylilies, which looks rather sorry for itself. And the primrose, which one of them ‘deadheaded’ whilst I was watching.

  4. First sighting of a pair of ducks this year.
I had seen the male and the female earlier but today is the first time that I saw them together. I approached carefully to say 'hello' and supply a little more breakfast, expecting them to be shy initially. They weren't - both were supremely relaxed with me and confident.
They are also used to me pointing the camera at them.
We know each other well from previous years.

  5. Catkins on a Salix gracilistyla Mount Aso. The catkins are produced in spring before the leaves.
I moved this shrub a couple of years ago from an area, where it was not doing well. It is meant to grow up to three metres tall but is still tiny, probably on account of its hard start in life.

  6. Started my sowing at the weekend. It's odd. Every year I am determined not to grow anything other than the essentials - vegetables and a few annuals. And every year I end up with a planting list as long as my arm. Does this sound familiar???

  7. In Austria and probably other German speaking countries these are called Barbarazweigerl.
Barbara referring to St. Barbara and Zweigerl meaning twigs.
Typically, the cuttings come from fruit trees. I have used wild cherry and Forsythia, both also traditional.
They come in on St. Barbara’s day (4 December) and should flower by around Christmas. Mine never do, they have only just started to flower a couple of days ago.
Admittedly, not exactly impressive but I have found a few ideas for how to help them to do better next year.

  8. Even on a grey and dull December's day, the garden looks beautiful. The grasses and dogwoods glow with autumnal or, rather, wintry colour and the seedheads provide texture.
We leave the old growth until next spring. It is so important for the wildlife. Birds and small mammals still find food from the seeds and berries. Insects overwinter in leaves and seedheads. The old growth also provides shelter for other small creatures over the winter.
Besides, if we cut down everything now, the garden would be bare, unsightly and boring for the next several months.
