Honestly, that it took this long ^^; We all know about #Wolfi & #ChainGuard bringing secure, #distroless container images to the masses - as they've been doing that for a couple of years now.

But #Fedora upping the ante by giving you a slim container base WITH all the solid RPMs they package is great! It adds competition and gives alternatives to the user - so yay!

With all that in mind, I'm leaning towards keeping things "simple" by just using #Docker #Compose, and making custom #Wolfi images where needed (PHP-FPM + APCu).

At least with Docker Compose, I can run the same script inside a Vagrant box for local testing. That's not to say I couldn't do that with everything (Nomad, Consul, Vitess), but it's a lot less work right now.

I'm still not sure where #HashiCorp #Packer fits into the picture, if it even does. 🤔

Anyways, the last part of today's research dive was more #Docker.

The most interesting discovery was #distroless images. I was familiar with #Alpine #Linux, but I hadn't really stumbled across distroless yet. Specifically I noticed that #Envoy shipped a distroless image, but neglected to really explain it short of "it's faster and better".

Google's distroless project is limited to standalone application runners (Node, Java), but #ChainGuard has their #Wolfi images that cover more bases. 👍

The #wolfi GNU/Linux distribution is going on tour, with my good friend @eddiezane showing it off and teaching people how to use our modern take on GNU/Linux, which takes concepts from #AlpineLinux, Embedded Linux and traditional GNU/Linux distributions to create a compelling and composable distribution for the cloud-native world.

i'm told that we are working on swag for the #wolfi gnu/linux distribution (yes, i know, our marketing people call it an undistro because it's modular and does not necessarily provide a kernel)

I just realized that #Wolfi is labeled as a "Linux (un)distro", but it doesn't even have a #Linux kernel as part of it.

"I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, a collection of userspace packages built against the UAPI headers provided by the Linux kernel."
